Summary:
Essentiallythestudysoughttofindacorrelationincorticalthicknessamongtypically
developingyouthwithASD(autismspectrumdisorder)traitsandantisocialtraits.Threehundred
twentythreetypicallydevelopingyouth,betweentheagesthreeandtwentynine,participatedin
thestudy.Theyprovided16scansaswellastworatings,theSocialResponsivenessScale
(SRS)andtheAntisocialProcessScreeningDevice(APSD).HigherscoresontheSRS,
indicatinggreaterASDtraitswereassociatedwiththinningprimarilyintheposteriorright
temporalgyrusextendingintotheangulargyrus.HigherscoresontheAPSD,indicatinggreater
antisocialtraitswereassociatedwiththinningintheanteriorfrontalgyriandthepreand
postcentralparietalcortices.Forthemostpart,theseregionsweredistinctandseparatefromeach
otherbutforasmallregionofoverlapintheleftmedialparietalcortex.Thisevidenceof
consistentthinninginparticularareasforvaryinglevelsofaparticulardisorder(ASDor
antisociality)suggeststheexistenceofacontinuumunderlyingthosedisorders(Forexample:
LowerASDtraitswouldhypotheticallyshowlowerthinninginthoseparticularregions.Higher
ASDtraitswouldhypotheticallyshowgreaterthinninginthoseparticularregions).Theregions
ofthinningforASDtraitsandantisocialtraitsweredeterminedinthisstudy.Thestudyalso
confirmedanoldertheorythatareasofthinningcontrolbehaviorsthatareaffectedinpatients
withthatdisorder/thinning.Thestudysresultswerenotsignificantlyaffectedbyage,
socioeconomicconditionsandIQ.However,thestudyislimitedbecauseitwasnot
epidemiologicalandbecauseitincludedsomeparentratingsandsomeselfratingsintheSRS
andAPSD.Onthewhole,thestudywasabletosupportthehypothesisthattherearedissociable

corticalcorrelationsinASDandantisocialtraitsandthatthesecorrelations/associationsare
stableacrossdevelopmentinTDindividuals.

Critique:
Overall,thearticlewasagoodread.ItwasinterestingtoseearelationshipbetweenASDand
antisociality,twodisordersthatnormallywouldn'tbeassociatedwitheachother.However,the
articlewasslightlyarduoustoread.Thelanguagewasprettytechnicalandittookefforttonot
losetrackofthetext.Evenafterreadingthearticle,ittakestimeforittosinkin.However,the
processofreadingthearticleisrewardinginthatitprovidesanewperspectiveonbrain
developmentandtheeffectofminordifferencesinbrainstructureonbehaviorandlearning
abilities.Theideathatcorticalthinninginpartsofthebrainjustinchesapartcanleadto
disordersasdifferentasASDandantisocialityhighlightsthespecificityofthebrain'sfunctions
whilealsopointingatcertainsimilaritiesbetweenthetwodisorders.Itwasalsonicetoseea
studywheretheyusedfairlysimplemethods(onlytwoquestionnairesandsixscans),which
allowedforabetterandmoreindepthunderstandingofeachoftheirsignificancesaswellas
theirrolesinthestudyasawhole.Thoughthearticlewasinformative,Iwouldn'trecommendit
totheclassasawholebecauseitmightbealittletoomuchforsomepeople.Onthewhole,Idid
enjoythearticlethoughitrequiredagoodbitofworkinmypart.
