My Genogram Summary

When I finished documenting and creating my genogram diagram, I was surprised at how
there are similar themes, patterns of career advancement, areas of interest and skills
between both sides of my family. Because I am From Mexico, a lot of what is focused in
both sides of my family is politics, business, education and culinary sciences. Some of
these themes even intertwine. My paternal grandfather was the Agriculture Ambassador
for Mexico in Washington D.C., but also took his knowledge into teaching it at
Georgetown University. Similar to my Mothers sister, my aunt was a chef, accountant
but now teaches accountancy at Monterrey Institute of Technology (MIT). Some jobs and
occupations I had forgot of, and when I talked to my parents again was reminded of some
things that overlap with what I am interested in. For example, I always thought my mom
was into business, math and numbers. I know I do not want to get into that, but when
talking to her she reminded me of her Mexican jewelry and artisan goods business called
Silver World.
In relation to my fathers sisters, both are very creative in their own career choices. My
aunt Alicia enrolled in a community college in Mexico and after touring Europe for 4
years, decided she wanted to be an interpreter. Being able to interpret Spanish, French
and Italian, my aunt reminds me a lot of my interests with languages. Though I may be
interested in it in a different way, my familys interest in learning new languages and
being tri-lingual is important.
I was involved with theatre throughout my entire middle school and high school life. I
always wanted to act on stage and be a public speaker. After gaining this confidence, I
joined Mock Trial at my school and played a defense attorney for two years. I realized

that my interest could have sparked from my grandparents interest in the law, as well as
my dads brother. There is a very long line of politicians in my fathers side, as my great
great grandfather, Benito Juarez, was the first recognized president of Mexico. Though
my family is very involved in politics back in Mexico, I dont intend to plan a career in
law. From this, though, I can understand why I love public speaking and why I love
informing people of current events. This can explain my love for the news and working at
a news station. I am very interested to someday be a news anchor for CNN en Espaol,
and though I know its a long shot, the kind of family background I have has certainly
helped me prepare.
In relation to business and accountancy, my family has a big side of that too. My mother
and her siblings all went to a technology based university and each graduated with a B.S..
Its interesting to see how my aunt graduated with a B.S. in agricultural engineering, and
my mom was more on the business/engineering field. My aunt used that to establish her
passion for food and interest in the culinary world as well.

Overall, both sides of my family are into the food industry. Both sides have a restaurant
or are in the restaurant business, and both have an interest for science as well. Though I
do think that I am interested in the food business, its not the first thing that comes to
mind. I think more than anything, both of my grandfathers interest in political science and
public speaking is something I can closely relate to.
