WN: Answer the following questions about the two-sample blog

postings posted on Titanium.
1. Can you find a thesis in each of these blog postings? Write
the first three words of each thesis (or write no thesis).

Regarding Forget Green, Go Blue!

Thesis: this is just SOME photo of SOME buoy

SOMEwhere out in the ocean. Non-argumentative

Regarding Has the Qure been found?

Thesis: The Qure water bottle is effective at

drawing in health conscious consumers and
convincing them that alkaline water is important in
ones diet

2. Does the first artifact explain what its visual text is trying to
make you think or do, and how are the visuals are helping to
send that message? Does it analyze the role is water playing
in that communicative effort?

Regarding Forget Green, Go Blue!

No

The visuals help send the message by giving the

reader a visual image regarding what hes talking
about. Throughout his essay he refers several times
to buoy and by understanding clearly what it looks
like, itll help the reader visualize what he is
explaining better.

It does appear to analyze the role water is playing,

but that doesnt mean that the essay is written
correctly in an accurate communicative effort.

Regarding Has the Qure been found?

Yes

The visuals help send the message by giving the

reader a clear visual representation regarding what
he is trying to communicate. By reading his essay, I
am able to fully understand what hes talking about
and I believe that he clearly communicated his
message to his potential readers.

Water is undoubtedly used throughout the entire

essay when trying to communicate with the reader.

3. Does the second artifact explain what its visual text is trying
to make you think or do, and how the visuals are helping to
send that message? Does it analyze the role is water playing
in that communicative effort?

Regarding Has the Qure been found?

Yes the second artifact clearly explains what the

visual text is trying to make the reader think and
do.

Throughout the essay, the author gives many

references to visuals helping him communicate his
message. An example of a visual is, At first
glance, the Qure water bottle is filled with bright
purples and blues, and crisp green leaves, the
colors a consumer would associate with
cleanliness.

4. Which artifact more successfully supports its claims with

specific evidence from the visual text? Explain.

The essay Has the Qure been found? hands down,

without question, successfully supports its claims with
specific evidence from the visual text. There are many
examples for me to list here, but one of the most
notable mentions in the essay are:

Example 1: At first glance, the Qure water bottle is

filled with bright purples and blues, and crisp green
leaves, the colors a consumer would associate with
cleanliness.

Example 2: Placed in the middle of the bottle is a

figure of strong man (Fig.1), encompassed by a
water drop. This picture grabs the attention of a
health conscious consumer for many reasons.
Without words, it states that water is the base of a
healthy life. The fit man is standing in a similar way
to two crucial poses; the anatomical position of
man and the beginning yoga pose of Tadasana
(mountain pose). These two stances represent the
standard and strongest position of the body,

sending the message, subconsciously, that Qure

water is the foundation of healthy living.

Example 3: Other aspects of the label such as the

social network signs on the back and the
description of how to accurately test the pH of
water. He goes on to explain and give the
impression to customers that this brand may be
superior and trendier than other ordinary water
brands.

WN: Describe your current active reading process. Which practice
discussed by Palmquist would you like to develop in your reading
process?
On pg. 66 of Palmquist, I would like to develop the practice of Read to Understand.
I agree that by applying the reading to understand mentality will allow the reader to have
a better understanding of the most important information, ideas, and arguments in a
source. It will help them write and understand arguments better and be able to understand
all sides of the argument allowing them to articulate concisely what they are trying to
explain.

Instruction:
WN: In what ways did any of the figures influence your understanding of
one of our shared readings? Try using concrete, specific verbs like
illustrate, clarify, arouse, or confuse.

The author of this article:

http://www.mercurynews.com/science/ci_27406666/plan-raise-shastadam-takes-hit-after-federal does not clarify where the flooding salmon
habitat would take place. In my opinion, the way he words the article
makes reading confusing and very ambiguous. It also does not properly
illustrate his point clearly. Lastly, he seems to confuse salmon
impacts with impacts on other endangered species.

Instruction:
WN: Post-Write question.

1. What does your draft argue that your picture is

trying to make you do/think/believe/know
Most Americans do not think about shortage of
water.
2. About which aspect of your blog posting are you
most concerned? How can your reviewers best help
you?
The part where the lack of water can and will
lead to war and violence, unless we change our
water usage, divide our resources better and
develop advanced technology to help us reduce
water usage and reduce water pollution.
My reviewer can best help me by being brutally
honest, show sophisticated attention to my blog
essay draft, tell me how to correctly use MLA or
APA Style citations, tell me if Im being clear or
specific, and if I have outstanding control of
language.

Peer Reviewed Comment:

My thoughts: When reading your first paragraph, the artifact that you used wasnt
clear to me until the fourth paragraph. I think you should somehow incorporate this into
the first paragraph. Also, your thesis wasnt all that clear, and Im not sure if I found one.
Your citations however appear to be well done. I dont see any noticeable errors in them
and its pretty clear where you got your information. There are a few grammar mistakes
and punctuations errors.

WN: What questions are important to ask about your audience before
writing?
Before writing, the most important questions to ask your audience are:
o What message are they trying to tell us?
o What are the Beliefs, values, knowledge and experience of the
Audience?
o How do we communicate? Do we use ethos? Display were an
important authority on this subject? And/Or write eloquently to
show attention to detail and that we care about quality of work
that is to be done.

WN: With your table, complete a rhetorical triangle that describes the
rhetorical situation of our rhetorical analysis blog.

Message: They are trying to tell us their

volunteer-activist network has successfully
battled every environmental issue plaguing
our coasts and threatening our ocean,
winning a record of 300 victories in the last
10 years.

Audience: They are all

about the environment.
They believe in solving
the waste that is plaguing
the coast and oceans.

Context: Their logo immediately is

trying to portray that they are trying
to celebrate 300 years of coastal
cleanliness. Also, their logo shows
many symbols regarding the beach
and how clean the ocean is while also
showing the types of waste they
cleaned up.
Purpose: Their purpose is
all about environmental and
removing waste on earth.

Communicator: Their website

is clearly engaged with the
community and according to
their website, they show that
they are heavily involved, at
least politically, in cleaning
water and waste.

WN: Process: Brainstorm figures you might use in your blog post. How will you
position, describe, and cite it/them? What purpose will they serve in your post?

I will position the figure in my blog post near the second page and also make it a
somewhat controversial and have an evoking message using pathos urging people
to do something. As of right now, I am thinking of the title, War for Water. Im
thinking of using this paragraph as a basis for my conclusion:
o The lack of water can and will lead to war and violence, unless we change
our water usage, divide our resources better and develop advanced
technology to help us reduce water usage and reduce water pollution. In
short, everyone should save water
I will be using citations to cite my image, statistical data to provide a more
convincing argument, and other websites to give me more points of view on why
this is such a huge issue.
The ad will evoke an emotional and controversial message to the readers, here is
the image:

The way that I position the ad and choose my ad will demonstrate further
emphasizing the importance of the thesis I am trying to portray to my readers.
Hopefully this image is good enough to write an interesting blog post!

WN: Compare the two profiles you read last night. Which was more successful at
convincing you that this was an important subject, and why? (sample profile 1.docx
and Valentine Abe profile.pdf)

The profile Valentine Abe was more successful at convincing me that

this was an important subject because it was really interesting and
emotional story. Unlike the other profile example, the very first
sentence didnt make me feel that connection like the Valentine Abe
profile did. The first sentence for the document Sample profile 1.docx
was:
o Have you ever turned on your kitchen faucet and smelled the
stench of fecal matter?

This definitely made me feel as though this article is not to be taken seriously as
opposed to the other profile. Also by former President Bill Clinton picking Abe
for Time Magazine for 100 most influential people in the world made a sound
impression on me. I would have to say, hands down, that Abes story is the clear
victor in convincing me that this was a more important subject.
