QReate and ConquAR:

Using Quick Response (QR) Codes and Augmented Reality (AR)

for Digitally-Enhanced Library Resources and Activities

Facilitators Guide for Using the Workshop Guidebook

This facilitators guide uses The 5E Learning Cycle as an instructional model in the delivery of the workshop.
1. ENGAGE
a. Welcome the participants to the workshop.
b. Introduce the topic for the workshop.
c. Distribute the guidebook to the participants.
d. Discuss the use and relevance of the workshop to the current efforts of making the library
experience become more digitally-enhanced and interactive. (Refer to pages to and 3 of the
guidebook)
e. Show a sample of a poster that has a functional QR code and an Aurasma trigger image. (You can
use the photo of a student poster found on page 38 of the guidebook.)
f. Ask the participants: How can you make this poster more engaging?
Allow the participants to discuss their answers for a couple of minutes.
g. Obtain an iPad and demonstrate how to use the interactive elements in the poster. Scan the QR
code using the QRafter app and the trigger image using the Aurasma app.
h. Ask the participants to describe what they have seen. Allow the participants to share situations
where they have seen similar digital effects. (Example: Harry Potter movies where books come
alive.)
i. Ask participants how such mobile technologies may benefit the school library.
j. Call a participant to read the learning objectives of the workshop (Refer to page 4).
k. Briefly describe each of the objectives.

2. EXPLORE
a. QR codes:
i.
Show a photo of a QR code.
ii.
Ask participants to compare QR codes from ordinary barcodes they see in grocery items.
iii.
Discuss basic background concepts about QR codes. Refer to pages 5-6 in the guidebook.
iv.
Show a variety of items containing QR codes.
v.
Ask participants to refer to the diagram on page 7 as you demonstrate how to scan QR
codes using an iPad.
vi.
Tell the participants to form work pairs.
vii.
Provide each pair an iPad with the QRafter app already installed before the start of the
workshop.
viii.
Ask participants to do Exercise 1 on page 7 of the guidebook by following the job aid
provided.
ix.
When done with Exercise 1, encourage participants to also scan the QR codes on the
different items that you showed previously.
x.
After Exercise 1, assign each pair to a desktop computer for Exercise 2.
xi.
Assign each pair to a desktop computer with an access to a printer. Tell each pair to make
and print a QR code by referring to page 8 on the guidebook. On page 8, they may either
study the job aid or use an iPad to scan the QR code that links to a video tutorial.
xii.
Address questions or clarifications from the participants as they complete Exercise 2.
xiii.
After the participants have completed Exercise 2, tell them to study pages 10 to 18 of the
guidebook that show various examples of possible QR codes applications in the library.
Allow each pair to scan the QR codes on the guidebook and brainstorm ideas for future
library use.
xiv.
Ask the participants to write down new ideas about QR codes they have thought of while
exploring the examples given.

b. Aurasma (Augmented Reality)

i.
Show the participants a photo that is used as a trigger image for Aurasma.
ii.
Use an iPad and scan the image to show the video overlay to the participants.
iii.
Ask the participants to refer to page 19 on the guidebook and let them explain the terms
trigger image, overlay and aura.
iv.
Discuss the basic background concepts about Augmented Reality and Aurasma as shown

on page 19 in the guidebook.

Tell the participants to refer to page 20 to open the Aurasma app (previously installed)
on their iPads and create their accounts.
Tell the participants to study page 21 and let them explain the concept of follow in
Aurasma.
Direct the participants to page 21 and make them follow the user (aismtech) who
created the Aurasma images contained in the guidebook.
When participants have followed the channel, tell them to do Exercise 3 and scan the 3
trigger images given. To do this, tell the participants to either follow the steps in the job
aid or scan the QR code using QRafter to watch the video tutorial.
When participants have successfully demonstrated how to scan trigger images in Exercise
3, direct the participants to pages 24 to 25. Tell the participants to study how to create
auras either by following the steps in the job aid or by scanning the trigger image using
QRafter to watch the video tutorial.
After studying how to create auras from the guidebook, tell the participants to pair up
again. Assign each pair to a computer and tell them to do Exercise 4.
After participants have completed Exercise 4, explain how auras can also be created
using the Aurasma Studio website. Briefly discuss the advantages of using Aurasma
Studio compared to the Aurasma app on mobile devices. Tell the participants that
creating auras using Aurasma Studio is not part of the workshop due to time constraints.
Have them note that they can explore the website on their own later after the workshop.
Tell the participants to study pages 28 to 35 that show various examples of possible
Aurasma applications in the library. Allow each pair to scan the trigger images on the
guidebook and brainstorm ideas for future library use.
Ask the participants to write down new ideas about Aurasma they have thought of while
exploring the examples given.

3. EXPLAIN
a. After exploring the Aurasma sample pages in the guidebook, gather the participants in the
discussion area.
b. Tell the participants to form new pairs and share with their partner about the new ideas they
have about QR codes and Aurasma that could potentially be used in the library.
c. Ask the pairs to study page 36 and compare the uses and limitations of QR codes and Aurasma.

4. EXTEND
a. Direct the participants to study pages 18 and 35.
b. Tell the participants to work in pairs. Allow them to think of new ways to create mash-ups using
at least two online tools or apps given in the pages that can be combined with QR codes and
Aurasma.
c. Call each pair to share their ideas with the rest of the group.
5. EVALUATE
a. When done with the group discussion, tell the participants to work in pairs and do Exercise 5.
b. When each pair is done creating their interactive poster, allow the pairs to evaluate each others
poster using the scoring guide provided in the guidebook.
c. When done with the evaluation, close the workshop and thank the participants.
