Challenge to Ulin contract

By Tom Pilla
Times Staff
The Department of Conservation and Recreation
this past week appeared to confirm one of the allegations put forth by the Friends of Ulin Rink in the
citizen groups challenge to the rinks management
contract.
What action could be taken by state agencies that
received the complaint, however, remains unclear,
as two state regulatory agencies have yet to declare
their intentions.

Responding to an email inquiry, DCR Acting

Press Secretary Bill Hickey wrote: DCR does not
have a record of approving in writing the [Milton-Curry College] contract in 2013. The town did
not request DCRs consent in 2013, as they did in
2010.
DCR, which owns Ulin, contracted with Milton
in 2010 to manage the rink for five years, and the
town subleased management to Curry College for
three years in 2010 and again for two years in 2013.
The terms of the DCR contract appear to require

Discovering
Milton from A-Z
By Morgan Peterson and
Veronica Surrette-Fahey
(Editors note - Morgan Peterson and Veronica Surrette-Fahey are college students and Milton residents
who worked with the Milton Times this summer as
interns. Their final piece for the newspaper was this look
at the town from A to Z.)

Milton, Massachusetts, was settled in 1640 as a

part of Dorchester. Now Milton stands on its own
with many different areas that make the town what
it is. Here is a list in alphabetical order of some of
the places that can be found in this unique town.

Andrews Park. Located on Belcher Circle behind East Milton Square; this nineacre park includes playground equipment,
three tennis courts, basketball court, two little league
baseball diamonds, soccer fields and a softball field.

Blue Hills. The Blue Hills Reservation is

a state park, managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and
Recreation. The park extends into Milton, Quincy,
Braintree, Canton, Randolph and Dedham.

Chickatawbut. Chickatawbut was the

leader of a large group of indigenous people in the Massachusett tribe during the
period of English settlement. Two areas in Milton
and the surrounding towns are named after him
including Chickatawbut Road, one of the Blue Hills
Reservation Parkways, and Chickatawbut Hill, the
highest point in Quincy.

MPS Administrators ready for new tasks

By Ken Green
Times Staff
As a new school year gets underway, students at each
level are getting adjusted to new surroundings and new
tasks. Meanwhile, several administrators in the Milton
Public School systems are making the same adjustments.
Two of the biggest changes in the administrative
ranks this year are the appointment of Janet Sheehan
as assistant superintendent of curriculum and human
resources and Holly Concannon as principal of Collicot
Elementary School.
Sheehan replaces longtime Assistant Superintendent
John Phelan, who took over as superintendent of the
Belmont school district this year. Concannon, meanwhile, is replacing Sheehan as principal of Collicot
Elementary School.
The changes may mark drastically new assignments
for the two, but the close, interactive nature of the Mil-

ton school district may make the transition a relatively

easy one.
Im very excited about it right from the start,
Sheehan said. One of the exciting things about our
leadership team is that we work together, pre-K to 12.
We look at the whole picture and look at the district
goals together.
Both Sheehan and Concannon had impressive shoes
to fill, but both are more than prepared for the task,
thanks to experiences learned both in and out of the
school district. Prior to serving three years as principal
of Collicot, Sheehan was principal of the Joseph Osgood Elementary School in Cohasset for 10 years. (She
has also worked in the Norwell and Randolph school
districts as well.) But before that she was a member of
the Milton school district, serving as assistant principal
of Collicot from 2004-2011.
Sheehans experience in education also includes serving as a member of the adjunct facility at Lesley Univer-
