Subject: Math

Grade Level: 2nd

Mentor: Monica Rhodes

Campus/District: Chisum Date: 4/30/15

Elementary
Overall Goal of Lesson: Students will know and understand how to tell time by the minute.
Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to look at a clock and tell the hour and the minute. Students
will determine between AM and PM.
Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) & ELPS:

(1) Mathematical process standards. The student uses
mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate
mathematical understanding. The student is expected to:
(A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday
life, society, and the workplace;
(9) Geometry and measurement. The student applies
mathematical process standards to select and use units to
describe length, area, and time. The student is expected to:
(G) read and write time to the nearest one-minute
increment using analog and digital clocks and distinguish
between a.m. and p.m.
Higher Order Questions: Why is it important that we know how to use an analog and digital clock?
What is the difference between using AM and PM?
Student Activities: Student will engage in discussion using prior knowledge, work in a small group or
one-on-one with teacher, and participate in a hands-on activity.

Teacher Input/Lesson Activity:
The teacher will pass out a handout asking students to tell time by the minute, determine if it

is AM or PM, and whether it is an analog or dialog clock.
Modeling: The teacher will work with students on using a manipulative clock to show the
show how the hands move on the clock and how to tell what the big and little hand is
pointing too.

Guided Practice: The students will play a game on determining time on digital and analog
clocks.
Independent Practice: The students will be given a handout to practice work on telling
time to the minute independently.
Lesson Closure: Once the students have completed their work, they will receive a Ticket
Out the Door question to complete. What time is this 12:33? (On an analog clock)
Assessment Methods/Strategies: Students will be assessed throughout the lesson by
participation and observation. Students will also complete a Ticket Out the Door question.
What time is this? `12:33 (On an analog clock)
