RATIONALE

REFLECTION
(To be completed after lesson
is presented and taught)

I will begin the lesson by

asking the students to think
back to when they were a
Pilgrim for a day (a lesson
they did around
Thanksgiving). I will ask,
How was your life different
when you were pretending to
be a Pilgrim? How was your
life the same? I will
emphasize that things
change over time.
I will then show the students
a video about how things

This will be effective as

this will tap into students
prior knowledge and
connect them to the
lesson.

This will allow the

students to engage in
media to gain knowledge
about what we are going

This was a perfect

introduction as it tapped
into the students prior
knowledge. It also gave
them an opportunity to
compare and contrast,
which was a key concept
within the lesson.
The video was excellent
because the students
were able to see the
past come alive through
the media presentation.

have changed in just the last

few years. I will ask them to
think about how their lives
may be different from their
parents, grandparents or
guardians lives.

Following the video, I will

introduce vocabulary words
using realia to demonstrate
the meaning of the words.
The definition of these words
will also be on the smart
board as I go through the
meaning
The words I will introduce
are:
Compare
Contrast
Past
Present

to talk about in class.

The students will be

introduced to vocabulary
that will help them
understand the lesson. The
use of a realia will further
help them understand
these important words.

RATIONALE

The realia that I used

was well received by the
students. I used two
separate Santa Clauses
to demonstrate the
concept of compare and
contrast. The students
enjoyed it and remained
engaged. They were
excited to participate
and seemed to be
understanding the
concepts.

REFLECTION
(To be completed after lesson
is presented and taught)

After introducing the students

to the vocabulary, I will
introduce the text that we
will be working with for the
day. Together, chorally, we
will read page 1 of the text.
Page 1 gives an example of
how things have changed
since their parents
generation to now.

After page 1, I will introduce

the concept of a Venn
Diagram. I will have a Venn
Diagram on chart paper so
the entire class can see it. I
will have the word past
over one circle, and
present over the other
circle. Where the circles
overlap I will have the word

This will allow the

students to hear the
reading, as well as
practice the reading. It
will also help to keep the
affective filter low.

This activity did not

seem to be as effective
as I hoped. Many of the
students began to get
off task and were not
participating in the
choral reading. Perhaps,
I could have broken the
students into groups
and had the students
read the passage with a
partner, or with a group.

The Venn Diagram will

provide students of a
visual as to how we are
going to compare and
contrast the past and
present. Furthermore, by
modeling it, I will
demonstrate what is
expected of each student
when they attempt to fill
this out. Also, allowing

The students became

engaged once again
when I introduced them
to the concept of the
Venn Diagram. They had
seen this type of
diagram before and
were ready to contribute
to the class. They were
also excited to work with
a partner to complete

same. I will explain to the

students that we are going to
think about how their
parents lives have changed.
I will then explain the Venn
diagram and how we use it. I
will model this, giving the
students a couple examples.
For instance, I will write
records in the past
category, and iPods in the
present category. In the
same. category I would
write, listen to music. After I
modeled the diagram I will
pass it out to the students
and ask them to work with a
partner to come up with
ideas of how things have
changed.
After a few minutes, I will
bring the class back together,
and ask what they came up
with.

We will then proceed to read

pages 2-3 of the text, which
further explains things that
have changed over time and
how things have stayed the
same.

them a chance to fill this

out will have them
critically thinking and
tapping into their prior
knowledge. Lastly, they
will be with a partner so
they have an opportunity
to collaboratively learn.

the task. However,

many of the students
became distracted by
working with a partner
and needed continual
prompting to stay on
task. Thus, I need to
work on my classroom
management skills when
I use collaborative
learning.

I will use this to gain

knowledge at to what the
students already know
and what they still need
to be taught.

This was effective as it

allowed me to assess
the students
knowledge.

This will give the

students further
information and help to
continue to explain the
vocabulary.

This will provide the

students with further
context, and help to
make the concept
concrete, rather than
abstract. The use of
visuals will aid in their
understanding.

To support the text, I will also

present the students with a
picture file to demonstrate
how things have changed, as
well as how things are
This will allow them to
similar.
apply what they just
learned by collaborating
and writing it down.
After this I will encourage
students to use this new
knowledge and once again
collaborate with their partner
to fill out the Venn Diagram.

Once again, during the

reading, the student
began to get off task.
Reading in smaller
groups, rather than as a
whole class, may be the
answer for this.
The students enjoyed
the picture file and were
very engaged in the
pictures that I was
displaying.

Once again, the

students were able to
collaborate with a
partner. Many of the
students were working
well with their partner,
discussing what they
were going to write
down and engaged in
the topic

BEYOND

RATIONALE

REFLECTION
(To be completed after lesson
is presented and taught)

After they had completed

their diagram, I would
ask for volunteers to give
me examples of what
they wrote down as
different. I will then ask
them to verbalize what
they wrote down as the
same. While the
students are doing this, I
will write their answers
down on the chart paper
so everyone can see.

The students will copy down

what I write on the Venn
Diagrams.

After this, I will wrap up the

lesson and remind the
students of what we
learned today and why it
is important.

This will provide the

students with further
support. If there was
something that a student
did not understand, this
will assist in clarifying. It
will also continued to
engage students because
they will be participating
in completing the Venn
Diagram on the board
with the teacher.
This will assist them in
filling in their diagram
with anything they may
have missed. This will
serve to reinforce the
concepts, and allow the
students to hear what
their peers may have
come up with.
This will provide closure
for my lesson and
encourage the students
to continue thinking
about what they have
learned.

Many of the students

were engaged in this
activity. They were
willing to participate and
wanted to give the
answers. However, at
this point, students
began to lose focus, as
the lesson had gone on
for too long, Thus, I
needed to pace myself
better and not have the
lesson drag on for too
long.
This was just acted as
further reinforcement of
the topic. Most of the
students were able to
complete this step and
copy down what I was
writing on chart paper.

This was important as it

wrapped up the content
and reminded the
students of the key
points of the lesson.
