Communication Scenario
Elaborates on a specific scenario dealing with communication issues between employee and
supervisor due to health issues and a leave of absence.
Background:
Tony has been employed at a call center for about eight months. Tonys performance in
his workplace is above average, however his time management skills need improvement. On
occasion, he tends to clock in five to ten minutes late. Although not frequently, this is still not up
to company standards.
Evaluates the current
situation and develops
problem solving techniques
to avoid
miscommunication.
Determine the instances
where both parties can
improve and handle the
situation more
professionally.

Day One:
On a specific Monday, Tony decides to call into work due
to his poor health and inability to perform his duties at work.
During his call with his supervisor John, he informs him about
his situation and inability to attend work. At this time, John is
understanding of Tonys situation and wishes him well, but
prompts him to inform him on his condition as soon as possible.

Day Two:
John receives no update on Tonys condition. Meanwhile,
Tony condition has gotten much worse leaving him bed rested
for the next 2 days. John is still lenient, due to the fact he was
able to schedule another worker to cover for Tony.
Day Three:
John is becoming frustrated due to Tonys lack of communication and decides to check in
with him. Tony informs him that hes still sick unable to get out of bed and received a doctors
note to remain at home and continue to rest for an additional two days. John reluctantly accepts
his explanation of the situation and continues to urge him to keep in touch.
Day Four:
John is becoming overwhelmed with his inability to schedule another employee to take
over Tonys shift. With the lack of communication from Tony, John begins to doubt Tonys
commitment to his job and wonders if the job is suited for Tony.
Day Five:
Recovered from his illness, Tony finds himself back at work dealing with a distraught
customer. After the call is finished, Tony is somewhat stressed and feels the need for a break.
However, before he can take his break, he gets called into Johns office to discuss his recent
performance and absence. Upon entering Johns office, he is greeted with a very serious tone.
John explains the effort that is required to work in a call center and how demanding the job is.
John then addresses Tonys lack of commitment to his job. Tony feels he is being personally
attacked and states the fact that he brought in all the proper documentation that was required.
John proposes an ultimatum to Tony to either improve his performance in the workplace, or to
find another job that is better suited for him.

Discussion: Communication
How can the situation be handled by both parties?
A warehouse stocking employee says: Though tony did show all the documents as an employee
overall and improve on his communication with fellow workers especially when he will not be
working as it gives all of us a harder time. Tony needs to focus on his attitude as it can become
problematic in the future.
A general manager says: Tony should have seen the action not as an attack but as a lesson to
grow from, but John also need to watch his tone with the ones he manages. Communication is
the biggest factor between the two if the problem persist we would need to relocate and or find a
new employee.
A Shift leader says: Both parties should have equally done something more Tony should have
been in more contact and John should have gotten help from a shift leader rather than taken the
responsibility for himself. John needs to see that we all have our roles and as a successful
company we must rely on each other

Do you feel lack of training was the issues?

A warehouse stocking employee says: Personally I dont feel lack of training was an issues
with Tony since his performance was above average. I think that changing the way he interact
with other could have helped out the issue he faced. If he allowed himself to have a better
attitude when receiving his manager concerns, he could have bettered himself in the long run.
A general manager says: When evaluating the situation you can see his that theres a lack of
training when it comes to Tony, with that being said I dont feel that is all Tonys fault. It could
mean the overall training within the call center need to establish a more productive way of
teaching their employees how to handle heated situation with a calm and understanding tone to
help defuse the situation. John also need to be more professional when dealing with his
employees. It seems as if he allows the confrontation to become personal.
A shift leader says: I feel both parties lack the basic training suited for their job description.
When dealing with either a customer, co-worker, or employer there has to be a certain level of
respect and understanding. It seem that Tony lacks those necessary requirement and is in need of
help. John as a manager need to provide that support in order to shape a better well rounded
worker as well as express a greater level of respect for his employees.

Conclusion
After reviewing the different perception of how both Tony and John could have handled
the situation better, we found that both parties could have treated the misunderstanding
differently for a better outcome. Though some felt that Tony could have handle the situation
better if he had more training it show that the attitude you present can also influence the outcome
as well. It also open the idea that many employers need to determine the thin line between
professional as well as personal. Whatever the case maybe both parties must work together in
creating workable solution when dealing with situation such as the one show as well as others.
It very important when dealing with any work environment to greatly create a main focus with in
basic training dealing with communication and how to defuse tense situation. This could allow
for more employer as well as employees to become better problem-solver as well as develop
better communication skills when discussing certain issues with others. Breaking down
communication barriers allow for a higher standard of communication allowing you to be more
productive with other which could create a better working environment.
