Subject: Data Visualization Infographics
Below is the the infographic as requested. This infographic was intended for an uneducated
audience on sex-offenders. The visual presents simple facts about sex offenders and some other
sexual assault statistics. Data sets, design choices, tools, and citation information is also included
below. The limitations of the infographic are discussed regarding what parts of the visual that
could not be accomplished.
Audience
The audience for this infographic is anyone uneducated about sexual assault and sex offenders.
This audience more than likely relies on myths or stereotypes of what a sex offender may be,
look like, or do during a sexual assault. This information is supposed to debunk these myths and
paints a picture as to how it could possibly affect them.
Data set
The data in the following infographic is from two sources: Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network
and Office of Justice Programs. Both websites are liable and have a sufficient amount of
information about sexual assault. What is disheartening is when the data is compared to previous
years. There is an incline of sexual assault, even though we are increasingly becoming aware of
it. The Office of Justice Programs makes an excellent point in that sexual assault is wrapped
around our culture and what we believe and how much we care (or dont care) about consent.
The Story
The story of my infographic starts off with people lined down the side. They represent different
types of people because a sex offender can be anyone; although most are male, which is why
there is only one woman. Each person is holding a statistics about offenders to disprove myths
the audience may believe. For example our culture views minorities as bad people or the sex
offenders, especially African American. However over 50% of sex offenders are white. On the
opposite side of the page it then has two statistics about how much money goes into a sexually
assault. Many people dont think about this side of sexual assault, we think about the emotions of
the person, but no one thinks about how much its going to cost that individual person to recover.
At the bottom of the page is another person holding a sign again stating how often individuals
are sexually assaulted in the U.S. Its to leave the audience thinking about this topic, and how
often it is. It allows reality to the topic a little bit.
Design Choices

Typography
The title Know the EnemyKnow the Costs in bold is to create curiosity. If something is
bolded then its clearly important; and everyone wants to know who their enemy is because no
one wants to be caught off guard. The listed facts are bolded to emphasize how important the
information is. Although all caps are a little aggressive, the font Stencil creates a very prison
like atmosphere. I arranged the statistics in the signs so it wasnt just bolded facts somewhere on
the image. By placing them inside a sign with a person holding it, it allows the statistic to
become real.
Color
I chose black, white, and greys because these arent happy statistics, and we certainly dont want
to see them in a happy light. The coloring gives it a grunge dreary look without being boring.
Layout
I chose the brick wall background because it was it symbolize the allies that are considered bad
places to be. Also brick walls also symbolize prisons, even though not a lot of sex offenders go to
prison. I chose to put the people down the side of the infographic so someone can easily just read
the facts as the skim down to the image. Then their eyes would go over to the bolded facts next
to them; or they would go reverse. Lastly I put the last figure on its own at the bottom as to be
the last things to be read because it is a thought provoking statistic.
Gestalt Design
Similarity / Anomaly
I used the similarity as much as I could in each picture even though they all were from different
sources. I stayed with the black and white for pictures so that they all matched.
Proximity and Alignment
The three pictures on the left are aligned to be as a group and the two facts on the right are
aligned to be a group.
Depth
The background provides depth as to make the pictures pop. The words on the signs on the
picture create another layer of depth as they pop off the signs.
Choice of Tool
I chose to work on Microsoft Word because it is a program that I know well. I used google to
find my pictures of people holding signs and background and the Word clipart for my money bag
images. I saved the pictures off of google onto my computer and then inserted them onto Word. I

then cropped them, sized them, and then placed them on the word document. In order to put the
facts on the signs I used a word box. And for the side facts and title I used WordArt.
Limits
What I really wanted was to have the people cropped out of the white boxes so they were against
the background and possibly even bigger. I think this would have created more depth. If I had a
better editing tool I would have been able to edit out the dashes and such on some of the pictures
that they put on them.
