Title of Project: Washy Washy Clean
Needs and Opportunities
Student attendance rates in our classrooms were low due to illness. The best way to
decrease illness and to increase attendance is to teach the students to properly wash
their hands. This sparked our interest to do our Google 20% project on handwashing.
We worked with the nurse, Mrs. Dewberry, the librarian, Mrs. Farnlacher, and Mrs.
Shackleford, the teacher in charge of Bucs Broadcast. In order to increase hand
washing at Trace Crossings, we created posters and put them around every bathroom
at TCES. Next, we filmed and inserted a hand washing segment into the Bucs
Broadcast, Trace Crossings student news broadcast. We created a letter to send to
every teacher with attached worksheets focused on hand washing. Finally, we
communicated with the school librarian and found handwashing books from the Hoover
library and made a display in the TCES library.
Audience / Clients / Users
Students and teachers school-wide will benefit from the project. Students were given
different ways to learn the material and teachers are given the resources they needed to
teach without having to create anything extra. The students were shown a video, given
an activity to do, and posters around the school to remind them what they were
learning. The teachers were provided with all the materials they needed including books
in the library to take the lesson a step further if they were interested in doing so.

Conclusion
Students must be in school to learn. If students are not taught to stay healthy then they
will be absent due to illness. To do this, we must teach the students how to stay healthy
in a kid friendly way and get them fired up about washing their hands. Creating this
project was designed for students to learn what needs to be done in order to keep
healthy and prevent illness.
