Where Should I Live?


For this activity, you will be researching the urban geography of different
American cities. You will then use that information to predict the
locations of different enclaves and assist individuals in finding the
neighborhoods they should live in.
1. My city is Los Angeles
2. Using the trulia link for your city, take a screen shot (Fn + prt sc) of your city
and insert it in the box below. Next to that image, take a screen shot of a
google map of your city to show the locations of major highways and
waterways.

3. Describe the relative location of the Central Business District. What types of
structures would you expect to find here? Why?
Central Business District in Los Angeles is mostly near the middle class to low
income housing areas. I would expect to find big industries and I would
expect to see low income houses that are slowly being gentrified, and inside

downtown I would expect to see skyscrapers because thats where the largest
businesses are found
4. Describe the relative location of the largest area of low income housing in
your city. What would you expect a residence to look like in this area given
its relative location?
The low income houses in Los Angeles are mostly located to the south of
downtown LA. I expect the houses to be not as big as the most of the houses
in LA but I expect them to be not that small and not that poor.
5. Describe the relative location of the largest area of high income housing
within the inner city (no suburbs). What would you expect a residence to look
like in this area? Why?
Most high income housings are located to the northwest of the CBD. I expect
the houses to be large houses owned by rich people.
6. Describe the relative location of the largest manufacturing center in your city.
You may wish to use google maps or a google search to help with this.
The largest manufacturing center in LA is located where the low income
houses are near the CBD.
7. Describe the relative location of the most affluent suburb in the outskirts of
your city. What would a residence most likely look like in this area?
The suburbs are found far away from the CBD. The residence there is mostly
high income residence.
8. Which urban model do you believe best fits your city? Explain why using the
location of at least 3 different urban regions.
Concentric Zones Models would best fit LA because the CBD is almost in the
middle, the low to middle class areas are around downtown and the rich
areas are far away from downtown Los Angeles.
You will be given a series of situations, and should explain where in
this city you believe that these different individuals should live using
the urban geography concepts you have learned in class. You should
provide the relative location, the name of the neighborhood, an
average house cost in that neighborhood, and an explanation for
each section.
Extra credit: Find a website for houses for sale, and select the actual
residence that each of the individuals should live in. Provide an
image of the residence, the cost, and an explanation for each.
9. I am a single young urban professional. I work for a multinational banking
corporation, and I make about $125,000/yr.

d. Explanation for selection: Its very close to the CBD which will be close
to your work
11.I am a high school teacher making about $50,000/yr. I am trying to buy a
house that will appreciate (rise in value) so that I can supplement my income.

d. Explanation for selection: its a cheap cast considering that its in LA
and its a price that will allow you supplement your income and it is
most likely to be gentrified
12.I am a recently married financial advisor making around $80,000/year. I will
probably be starting a family in the next few years, and am trying to move to
a location that would be a good place to raise my children.

d. Explanation for selection: a little expensive but it is a good place to
raise children and most of the best schools are located there
