We'll begin by thinking about the topic at hand: myth!

How can we begin to define

what we're studying?
How does myth work?
What have ancient and modern theorists, philosophers, and other thinkers had to
say about myth?
This week we'll also begin our foray into Homer's world, with an eye to how we can
best approach epic poetry. There are no assigned readings for this week, but we
recommend getting a head start!

What is myth?
Myth is one of those deep and highly values ideas that cultures use trying to
describe the world.
Nevertheless it still points to somtheing that endures over the time.
Complex, difficult to define.

but some other people say its true.
label something deeply and profoundly true.

Is it a lie or a true?
universal true or deep truth?
myth is actually a window into specific cultures and their own specific truth.
If you really want to understand what it means to be norse or irish you need to enter
deeply into their myths.
