Dramaturgy
Section 1
Paraphrase A3S1: In this act, the Montagues and the Capulets encounter their largest fight in
which several deaths occur. Shakespeare, in this scene, was showing us what grief and hatred
can do to a person.
Glossary:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Vile - Extremely unpleasant

Rat-catcher - an insult
Passado - Forward thrust with weapon
Hence - away (from)
Kinsman - family member

Context: This scene of Romeo and Juliet takes place in a high school.
Section 2
Kylie: Our chosen social problem is bullying. Bullying is something that all too often happens,
especially in educational settings like school. However, the root of bullying goes far before even
Romeo and Juliet. The aspects of it in the play shine thru when Tybalt comes after Romeo, and
when a fight erupts from that altercation.
Peter: For our educational outreach program, we would have everyone in the audience discuss
times when perhaps they were bullied or when they bullied others. After that we would discuss
the possible reasons for the bullying and ways to prevent it.
Kira: Only we, as a community, can end bullying. The second it is no longer cool to push
others around, people wont do it. It is extremely important to remember the words you say do
have an impact on others, and it is never beneficial to anyone to start a fight. End bullying by
thinking before you speak.

Directing
Directors concept:

For this production of Romeo and Juliet, we decided to go with a high school theme.
Bullying is a huge issue in modern day times, so we figured it would be both impactful
and meaningful to do it in the setting which we all know best: school. I can almost
guarantee that most kids in our audience will have experienced some kind of bullying,
or been the bully themselves, in one way or another. This scene directly deals with the
issues and the consequences that come along with bullying.
Directors notes: see script provided in class

Acting
Romeo: Romeo attempts to be the peacekeep in the this scene, but ultimately ends up
being the reason that Mercutio is killed. This is the event that sets off a domino effect
that ends up leaving both Romeo and Juliet dead. In trying to keep the peace, Romeo
ends up digging his own grave.
Tybalt: Tybalt is the instigator of this entire fight. Tybalt ends up killing Mercutio which
angers Romeo and Romeo kills Tybalt. Tybalt overreacts, leaving everyone else to deal
with the destruction and consequences in the wake of his death. Tybalt is the bully in
this scene.
Mercutio: Mercutio is killed in this scene, but he only dies after cursing both Romeo and
Tybalts houses. Mercutio is a good example of a person that is caught in the middle of
the fight and ends up being an innocent casualty. Even though he starts the actual fight
with Tybalt, the entire situation was something that was led up to for a long time.
Benvolio: Benvolio covers for Romeo after Tybalt is killed by claiming that Tybalt
attacked Romeo and Romeo tried to keep the peace but in the end, had to to kill Tybalt
in self defence. This instance proves Benvolios loyalty to Romeo and is also a good
example of an accomplice.
Prince:The Prince is the neutral side. There is typically a neutral side in every situation,
especially bullying ones. The Prince tried to keep any casualties to a minimum, but does
not succeed.
Lady Capulet: Lady Capulet represents the parents of victims. She watches in
frustration from a distance.
Montague: Montague is about the same as Lady Capulet.
