The question is to find the traceroute of, most probably, web servers in at least 10 countries from

at least 5 public traceroute servers called looking glass. Looking glasses are used to execute
traceroute command to any server. In this assignment, 3 different looking glass servers address,
using those we can find the traceroute. For example:

The above mentioned result was taken at http://www.ris.ripe.net/cgi-bin/lg/index.cgi to find the

traceroute of www.facebook.com. Firstly you have to choose traceroute option and enter url of
any country in argument and then execute. You will then get the traceroute and AS numbers and
different country codes as shown above. If you observe clearly in some cases we will get same
AS number for different routers. And you may also find some country codes in one traceroute
result that indicates the packets travel across multiple countries. Reflecting geographical
location in the picture will be interesting in terms of data visualization.
1. www.yahoo.co.in belongs to INDIA
2. www.facebook.com origins from US
Like this you have to search for url of 10 different and find the trace route. You are not supposed
to prefix the url with http:// to give the target server name or IP address to the looking glass.

The other thing is that some looking glasses will only give the ip address and may not give the
AS number. Eg: http://www.tracert.org/cgi-bin/traceroute/tracert.pl only gives ip address and
country location. To find the AS number of such system sir has given http://www.radb.net/ and
find the AS number using the IP address. There are many other sites in the google which give
AS number directly. You can find other looking glasses on google.

The picture shown above gives some EXAMPLE idea of visualizing the traceroute result from
Japanese server to www.yahoo.co.in. Here he got 13 different hops when he tried to find the
trace route. The source and destination are represented using circles and the routers using squares.
The routers having the same AS number (in one big circle) as a single entity. Also name of
country was put above each hop. If you finally integrate the all traceroute results in one picture,
that will represent the big picture of Internet.
