Socio-political Aspects in the 1960s.

In the sixties decade, happened many events that marked the history of Colombia and the
world. In the sixties, it was the fight between the capitalism and communism. In the world,
after the end of the World War II, new conflicts as the participation of USA in the Vietnam
war and the Cold War began. In the sixties, happened too events in the economy, because
the world was recovering of the World War II. In Colombia, the Frente Nacional was
developing.
The Vietnam War has been one of the bloodiest war in the history where 47,000 North
Americans and thousands of vietnamitas died. This war happened from 1946 to 1975. But
in 1960, the president of United States, John F. Kennedy sent an army to Vietnam to
participate in that war. The army was composed by 7,000 men. But with that intervention,
the rest of the countries stopped supporting to United States and affected the relationships
with the majority of countries. However, in 1969, Richard Nixon took the presidency and
he was the one who repaired the relations with other countries, and also helped to finalize
the war in 1973.
The Cold War was in 1950 to 1970. It was a fight between the United States and the Soviet
Union and there manifested differences into the cultures, styles of life, armies and the
economy, although in this war the countries did not fight with their armies but there was
diplomatic tensions. These countries attacked their enemies through other countries, that is
to say, these countries influenced other countries to attack their rival country.
At this time, the people demonstrated the racism and new rules appeared; rules like the
color people could not sit next to white people, or they either could not be in the same
place. There, Martin Luther King appeared, he led a revolution for the civil rights against
the racial laws. In 1964, Lyndon Johnson, the president after John F. Kennedy, signed a
memorandum removing the racial laws.
With regard to the economy, after World War II there was only one country that could stay
intact and stronger and it was the United States. The war also allowed many countries to

develop their industries. In the sixties, the economy was guided by USA because this
country had a capitalist increase.
In the sixties, in Colombia, the violence that we see today began. The violence started with
the FARC and the ELN, because the people were excluded and they could not participate.
This war began because the authority was divided between Liberals and Conservatives, and
the town didnt have voice to decide in politics aspects.
