Nu Chapter Minutes

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International

First Baptist Church, Kyle, Texas
Nu Chapter of Alpha State of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met on Tuesday, April 21,
2015 at 6:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church, Kyle, Texas for a regularly scheduled meeting. President
Sandra Morales and Secretary Kathy Carriker attended.

Members Present:
Sandra Morales, Nadyne Gartman, Mary Nabers, Susan Pulis, Robin EsteppLoretta Eiben, Cheryl Blake,
Kathy Carriker, Wanda Frix, Angie Smith, Gracie Rocha, Barbara Davis, LaVerne Rydell
After a welcome by President Sandra Morales and an inspirational reading by Nadyne Gartman, Nu
Chapter enjoyed delicious sandwiches with fruit and veggie trays prepared by Kyle members. Nu Chapters
birthday cake was served as dessert after Nu Chapters birthday celebration at the conclusion of the
meeting.
Meeting:

Call to Order

President Sandra Morales called the meeting to order at 6:55 p.m.

President Morales welcomed Nu members.

Secretary Kathy Carriker reported thirteen members present.

Approval of Minutes

Treasurers Report

The February 2015 minutes as posted on the Nu Chapter website were approved as
written.

President Morales presented the treasurers report for Treasurer Tonda Frady.

Morales reported a balance of $1,462.92 as of April 19, 2015.

President Morales reported expenses of $44.00 to the Scholarship fund and a


memorial contribution of $25.00 in memory of Grover Mitchell.

Corresponding Secretary Report

Corresponding Secretary Robin Estepp read a thank you note from Hays Caldwell
Womens Center Director Marla Johnson thanking Nu Chapter for the Washcloth
Bundles.

Estepp reported that she will send a sympathy card to member Tonda Frady on the
passing of her stepfather.

Committee Chair Reports:

Website

Webmaster Nadyne Garman reported that she updates the Nu website weekly.

Gartman reported moving printed items from the homepage to the


Archives section and photos into the Photos section.

Gartman reported she will continue as webmaster for New Mexico Delta Kappa Gamma
Society International.

Scholarship

Scholarship chair Cheryl Blake reported that Nu Chapter had no scholarship


applications at this time.

Membership

President Morales reported on behalf of Dr. Evelyn Barrett that Nu Chapter has
44 members, 40 active and 4 reserve members.

President Morales reported that Betty Brooks, Maggie Baines, Jo Ann Nocosia,
and Kay Hofer have been dropped from membership.

Robin Estepp reported on behalf of Dr. Evelyn Barrett that Nu Chapter has two
candidates for initiation into Nu Chapter.

Angie Lassiter of San Marcos was a recipient of a TRTA grant and has
been Teacher of the Year for her San Marcos I.S.D. campus.

Cynthia Marion of Wimberley has taught at the college level, traveled


throughout the world, and speaks several languages. Cynthia and her
husband own Travelphile Tours. They conduct tours around the US and
Europe every year.

President Morales reported that Nu Chapter will vote on these candidates via
email and by paper ballots for those not having email.

Orientation will be conducted after the voting is complete.

President Morales hopes to have initiation in May for these new members.

Newsletter

Mary Nabers announced that she will not be publishing the newsletter after this
biennium.

The deadline for applications is May 1, 2015.

Mary suggested the newsletter be assigned to a committee.

Programs and Services

Loretta Eiben announced that the Annie Application had been successfully
submitted on line.

Nu member Dr. Barbara Davis will receive Member in Print recognition at the
Alpha State Convention in June for her article, Navigating the Roles of
Leadership: Mentors' Perspectives on Teacher Leadership, published in the on
line edition of the Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin.

Unfinished Business

President Morales requested a show of hands for those going to the Alpha State
Convention in June. Also, requested members to register as soon as possible.

Loretta Eiben, Nadyne Gartman, Kathy Carriker, and President Morales will be
attending the State Convention.

President Morales requested items for the Unifying Project be brought to the May
meeting.

Nu President Sandra Morales submitted the application for the


Member in Print recognition.

New Business

Program Ideas for 2015-16

Connie Brooks volunteered to assist with Authors Night and invite area teachers
to attend.

A cooking demonstration by Kiss the Cook in Wimberley.

Invite historians to come speak to group and invite area students to attend.

A program on The Birds and the Bees, cross pollination. This speaker is in
Wimberley.

Tour the Commemorative Air Force Museum.

Nadyne Gartman suggested a meeting to spotlight outstanding students or a


program with area students.

Barbara Davis inquired about the LBJ Librarys traveling suitcase programs.

A Saturday meeting was suggested with various speakers presenting programs


that are open to the public.

Loretta Eiben said there was a S.M.I.S. D. policy about after school
programs on school property.

A suggestion was made to apply for an ASTEF grant for this meeting.

Meeting Room Suggestions

President Morales reported Horizon Bay Senior Living in San Marcos

has offered a meeting room for our meetings.

Laurie Kirkscey reported the Blanco Library may be a possible meeting


site.

San Marcos Library does not book as far in advance as needed for Nu
meetings.

The Dunbar Center is San Marcos was suggested. It has a $30 booking
fee.

Fundraiser ideas

Invite several area chapters to a silent auction to raise money for various
projects.

A Nu chapter garage sale.

President Morales made an announcement on behalf of Tonda Frady regarding an adult


spelling bee at the Wimberley Community Center on October 16, 2015 beginning at
11:30 a.m. to benefit the Wimberley Village Library and Friends of the Library.

The cost is $100 including lunch per three member team.

A trophy will be awarded to the winning team. There is a twenty team


maximum.

Script Howard Foundation rules will be followed.

Nu Alpha initiated 32 members.

Alpha State Officers initiated the members and installed officers of Nu Alpha Chapter.

Gartman published a photo of Alpha, Nu and Nu Alpha Presidents on the Nu website.

Nu Chapter presented Nu Alpha with a ceremonial brass tray.

President Morales invited members to the Bulverdes S.T.A.G.E. presentation Rebel Yells.
President Morales brother, Lou Garza, is the Director and the lead in this production.

Nadyne Gartman invited members to the New Braunfels Choir presentation at the Cross Lutheran
Church on April 26 at 3 p.m.

Nadyne Gartman and Nu President Sandra Morales traveled to Cedar Park, Texas on Sunday, April
12, 2015 to attend the Delta Kappa Society International Nu Alpha Installation.

Commemorative Air Force does have a room but there are stairs.

Announcements

Admission is $7 at the door.

Adjournment

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the business meeting.

The motion passed.

President Morales adjourned the meeting at 7:50 p.m.

After adjournment Nu Chapter celebrated its 85th Birthday.

PROGRAM:
Nu member Angie Smith presented, Music Through the Decades, an interactive program featuring hit
songs from the 1930s to the 2010s. It was fun for all to remember the tunes, lyrics, and to guess what year
they became hits.
