THIS WEEK IN YEAR 1

Please read below to see what we are doing in Year 1 this week so you can discuss and
revise with your child, as this helps them to retain what they are learning about in class.
Please also make sure to read to/with your child each day at home.

On Thursday students will enjoy exploring different

art centers such as pointillism, drawing selfportrait, creating a quilt piece and a book mark.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ABOUT

Students will be introduced to the concept of sound and learn to identify the
different sources of it.
Students will develop strategies for solving addition and subtraction story
problems (e.g. Amna brought strawberries for snack. She had 9 strawberries.
Then she ate 2 of the strawberries. How many strawberries did Amna had left?)
Use numbers, pictures, and words to represent a solution to a problem.
Work on finding combinations of numbers up to 10; and begin to recognize that
some problems have more than one solution. (e.g. I have 5 crayons in all. Some
are red and some are blue. How many of each color could I have?)
Practice decomposing numbers in different ways and how to use numbers to
record results; use numbers, and/or addition notation to record how many and
to represent an addition situation.
Readers will share the experience of talking about books with special guests
from KG 2.
Writers will keep working on poetry. They will learn different ways to show and
express feelings rather than tell while writing.
Students will review and practice spelling and meaning of all sight words
learned.
They will be exposed to long and short vowel sounds, and review common
spelling of vowel phonemes already studied: "oo, ai, ee"- (e.g.: moon, boots,
tooth, cook, tail, snail, pail, bee, tree, sleep, teeth, etc.)

Year 1 students have only one snack per day. Please remember to supply a
healthy snack and water for your child.
School opens at 6:45 am. Lessons begin at 7:00. Students arriving after 7:20
need to get a late slip from the secretary. Dismissal is at 12:00 noon.
