SWL VERIFICATION OF LIFTING SET BASE ON BS EN 12079-2

Lifting Set ID No.: 485/ST/VI/2014.

Lifting Set CoC No: 485/ST/VI/2014.
Lifting Set Description : 4 legged wire rope sling, 18 mm diameter x 2.7 m Length, to lift
portable gas rack as MGM = 2,785 kg. The lifting set is fitted to 14.4 tonnes master link, &
4.75 tonnes shackle.
Liftign Set Manufacturer Reference: BS EN 12079-2 (2006)
Wire Rope Manufacturer : Bridon
Wire Rope Mill. Cert. No : 16609
Grade of Wire Rope : 1960 (N/mm)
MBF of Wire Rope : 226 kN (22.6 MT)
Wire Rope Reference : BS EN 12385-4 (2002)
Problem :
Lifting set SWL that set by manufacturer (7.5 tonnes) is below from minimum
requirement of ANNEX A (BS EN 12079-2) , the minimum SWL to lift MGM = 2,785 kg
is 7.8 tonnes;
Lifting set effective working length (EWL) is not measured with correct method, it
should be measured from upper master link bearing point to shackle pin bearing
point, thus the EWL should be 2,700 mm instead of 1750 mm;
According to the correct EWL, the angle to vertical of lifting set should be 18.6,
instead of 30 (refer to actual lifting set estimation on page-2).

Solution:
Sling SWL calculation
Single leg wire rope sling SWL
MBL of rope : 22.6 tonnes
SF : 5:1
SWL : 4.52 tonnes (MBL/SF)

Page 1 of 3

This calculation SWL is higher than minimum requirement of BS EN 13414-1, it is higher

than 3.7 tonnes, it meet the minimum requirement.
4 legged wire rope sling SWL
SWL of 4 leg
: 3 x 4.52 tonnes x cos 45
: 9.5 tonnes (0-45)
This calculation of SWL is higher than minimum requirement of BS EN 13414-1, it is
higher than 7.8 tonnes, so, the 4 leg wire rope sling 18 mm diameter x 2.7 m length has
adequate SWL to lift the MGM = 2,785 kg at 0-45angle to vertical () as the BS EN
12079-2 requirement.
Actual Lifting Set (angle to vertical) Estimation.

1,219 mm

1,219 mm

Sin = 861.9 mm / 2,700 mm

= 1 (861.9 mm/2700 mm)
= 18.6, thus (0-45)
Conclusion:
The lifting set, ID. 485/ST/VI/2014., is fit for use, & meet the minimum requirement of BS
EN 12079-2.
