Prior Knowledge: Students have previously learned that some questions have hidden
questions that must be answered before the real problem can be solved in lesson 6-9.
Lesson Beginning: The teacher will put up the problem of the day up on the ActivBoard.
She will read the problem out loud to the class then allow them several minutes to
complete the problem on their own. She will then proceed to work though the problem
with the class to find the solution.
Instructional Plan:
1. The teacher will review the steps of good problem solving:
1. Plan and Solve
2. Answer the Question
3. Check your work
2. She will emphasize the importance of solving the hidden question and also
highlighting key words throughout the word problems.

3. The teacher will complete an additional guided practice problem with the class for
additional modeling.
4. For the third guided practice problem, the teacher will instruct students to turn to
their neighbor and solve the problem. She will then allow students to share their
responses.
5. For the fourth guided practice problem, the students will be instructed to solve the
problem independently. After a few minutes, students will be called on to share
their answers.
6. The teacher will then hand out the Topic 8 Word Problems worksheet. The
students will be instructed to break into their small groups to complete the
worksheet.
7. The teacher will work with one of the groups to complete the worksheet.
8. The teacher will instruct any early finishers to return to their seats and start
working on the enrichment worksheet provided.
9. Once most of the class appears to have completed the worksheet, the teacher will
instruct the students to return to their seats. The teacher will proceed to go over
the worksheet with them.
10. The teacher will then hand out the worksheet the students are to complete for
homework.
11. The teacher will then hand out the exit ticket and have the students complete the
question individually.
Closure: Once the exit tickets have been completed, the teacher will collect them. She
will then close with a brief class discussion, reiterating the three main steps of successful
problem solving. The teacher will call on students to share the steps.
Differentiation: Students will also be broken up into groups by math level and provided
with extra instructional support when completing the worksheet. Early finishers of the
activity will be instructed to complete a lesson related enrichment activity.
