ConflictinAmerica

TherearemanykindsofconflictintheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Themost
prominenttypeofconflictsareracialconflict,religiousconflict,andfamilialconflict.
ThesethreetypesofconflictarewidelycommonamongmanyUScitizens,andplaya
hugeroleinthenaturalevolutionofsociety,andisthereforeessentialtoitsgrowth.
Throughthehelpofreligious,racial,andfamilialconflict,theUShasshapeditselfits
laws,anditscustoms,anditsgovernmentintothecountryitistoday.
RacialconflictisanimportantpartofthehistoryoftheUnitedStates.Racismis
thebeliefthatallmembersofeachracehavetraitsorabilitiesspecifictotheirrace,and
thatthismakestheminferiortootherraces.Racismhasexistedthroughoutthehistory
oftheUS,andhasshapedlawsandstandardsofeachera.WhentheUScolonistsfirst
cametotheUS,NativeAmericansweretreatedasinferior,andlabeledassavages.
Obviouslytheywereraisedwithdifferentculturesandbeliefs,sothisisfalse.However,
intheyearsfollowing,theyweregivensignificantlylessprivilegethanmenofother
races.ThisisnottheonlyincidentofracialconflictthroughoutUShistory,though.Inthe
novel
TheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinn
,themaincharacter,Huck,fakeshisdeathto
escapehisabusivefather.HethenmeetsupwithanAfricanslavenamedJim.Huck
actuallyrespectsJimbytreatinghimasanequal,whiletherestofthecharactersare
outtokillhim.Thiswasverycontroversialforthetime,andcreatedalotofconflictthat
existsevennow.Racialconflictwillcontinuetoexistthroughouthumanitysexistence,

justasithassincehumanitysbeginning.
ReligiousconflictisanotherveryprominentinbothAmericashistoryand
The
AdventuresofHuckleberryFinn
.ThroughoutthehistoryoftheUS,religionhasbeena
bigissuebeforetheseparationofChurchandState.Religionplayedalargepartin
court,andhowjudgesprosecutedpeople.Ifthedefensewasntoftherightreligion,he
orshecouldbesentencedwithoutanyfurthertrials.Eventually,theSeparationof
ChurchandStatemadesurethatreligionplaysnopartinacourtoflaw.Thishas
resultedinlawsuitsbeingfairtobothsides,ratherthanbaseeverythingoffofreligious
beliefs.In
TheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinn
,Huckisveryconfusedastowhyhehas
toprayeverynight,whenhewaslivingwithWidowDouglass.TheWidowwouldtellhim
topray,andhewould,buthewouldseeitasunnecessary,orhewouldthinkthathes
notthekindofpersontogetwhathewants.Here,Huckisconfused,andhasinner
conflict.Heseesthatalotofpeoplepray,buthedoesntthinkitneedstobedone.This
isanexampleofreligiousconflict.
FamilyconflictisanotherkeytypeofconflictpresentthroughoutUShistory,and
in
TheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinn
.AccordingtoTheHistoryChannel,oneofthe
mostfamousfamilyconflictswasbetweentwofamilies:TheHatfieldsandtheMcCoys.
Theirconflictdatesbackto1865,however,theirmostfamouserabeganin1882,when
threemenfromtheMcCoyfamilygangeduponandkilledamanfromtheHatfield
family.TheHatfieldfamilyrespondedbycapturingthesethreemenandkillingthem.
Moredeathsensued,resultinginoveradozendeathsforbothfamilies.Throughoutthe
years,however,thefamilieshavestoppedfightingandhaveevenappearedona

gameshowtogether.Theimportanceofthiseventcomesfromthefactthat,whilethey
wereabletosettletheconflict,itdidclaimlives.In
TheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinn,
themostprominentfamilialconflictistherelationshipbetweenHuckandhisfather.
Throughoutthebook,readerslearnofhowterribleafatherPapwastoHuck,andthisis
provenwhenPapcomesbackandkidnapshuck,onlytoattempttostealmoneyfrom
him.InhisshorttimewithPap,huckisabusedmentallyandphysicallybyPap,through
theuseofbeatingsandvulgarlanguage.Thisrelationship,unliketheaforementioned
conflictbetweentheMcCoysandtheHatfields,isnevermended.HuckescapesPapby
fakinghisdeathusingpigbloodandabagofrocks.Thisrelationshipisimportant
becauseitshowshowbadsomeoneslifecanbeifonesparentsarecompletely
negligent.Itisaprimeexampleoffamilialconflict.
Conflicthasplayedahugeroleinboth
TheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinn,
and
theUnitedStatesasacountry.Ithasshapedcharacters,aswellaslaws.Religious
conflictwasahugepartofUShistory,andwasahugepartofthejudicialsystem.
Familiyconflicthassparkedsmallwarsbetweenfamilies,andcanbeemotionallyand
psychologicallydamagingtoachild,andlawshavebeenmadetopreventthis.Racial
conflicthasexistedsincebeforetheUSwascolonized,andstillexiststothisday.
Conflictisunavoidable,butitisnotalwaysanegativething.Therehavebeenvery
positiveresultsinthepast,andtherewillbeinthefuture.
