The Marshmallow-Eating Generation that is how Charles Wheelan or The Greatest

Generation, is the generation that includes the veterans who fought in World War II of the
lists of Generations . They were born from around 1901 through 1924, coming of age during
the Great Depression. But referring the Marshmallow-Eating Generation, he was referring in
a experiences that the society passed for an experiment of the Stanford University, citing
from the book 10 Things No Commencement Speaker Has Ever Said, from Charles
Wheelan, he mentioned why he gives the name of Marshmallow-Eating Generation, he
mentioned the following:
I claimed earlier that Tom Brokaw book about our generation might be called The
Marshmallow-Eating Generation. Heres why: In the late 1960s and early 1970s, researchers
at Stanford University conducted a now-famous experiment using young children enrolled at
Stanfords preschool facility. Experiments sat the students at table set with assorted objects
that children of that age would find desirable)marshmallow, colored plastic poker chips,
pretzels, and the like). The students were asked which of the objects they preferred.
Once that was determined, each student was offered an explicit choice that tested his or her
ability to defer gratification: get a small reward now or a bigger reward later. The
experimenter left the room, leaving a bell before the experimenter returned, he or she would
get a single marshmallow (or whatever other treat the student had chosen). However, if the
student resisted ringing the bell until the experimenter returned (typically after fifteen or
twenty minutes), he or she would hit the jackpot-at least in the eyes of a four-year-old. The
reward was two marshmallows.
And then , the author was explaining how was the results of the experiments, or how they
take the results of this experimentation: those students four-years-old had the capacity of
decide what decisions are the most difficulties that requires the pass of time and the patient
from them, defer gratification is correlated with better outcomes much later in life, such as
academic and social success. But some journalists of the time taken in a different
prospectives, a New York Times columnist David Brooks (mentioned on Wheelans book to)
that most of the social problems passed already, Life's a parade of foolish decisions: Teen
pregnancy, drugs, gambling, truancy and crime, like the author said, I ABSOLUTELY
AGREE, lamentably, at the end of the World War II, a lot of those veterans who survive to
the war, committed a big error coming after the bombs, weapons sounds, follow orders from
their commanders; came to the country and try the live La vida loca (the crazy life),
consume drugs, have a lot of babies, having sex, immorality; those family who were before
the war, maybe got loose on the results of the war, and then they demanded many rights
before they died, but they also benefit their children, known them as Baby Boomers.
But, what happen with this generation? What are the problems that our Generation to bear
the grief of the problems? Does this generation have optional solutions?
On the Millennial Generations problems, the most commons and the more notables are
Inequality, Environmental and Technological social issues. the First of them its the inequality
on our society, Inequality is a difficult problem that has existed throughout history and can
manifest itself in a variety of settings. An article published in the Journal of Future Studies by
Lorne Tepperman and James Curtis entitled Social Problems of the Future explains that
inequality is firmly entrenched in our society because ideological, religious, cultural, and
regional differences are a constant boundary resulting from generations of social rift.
The Second Generation Social Problem is I'll like i would re-name or call it, :The
Environmental Contamination, The Environmental problems as the rising global population
and limits of earths ability to sustain such a large population is a growing concern for the

future. While some regions are able to produce surpluses of food and necessities, others
face scarcity and famine. The consequences of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions
from industrial activity and transpiration are a threat to the environment. As Tepperman and
Curtis explain in the Article that i cited below, Many scientists and theorists believe that
unless changes are made today, environmental problems will become more severe and their
consequences more intense in the future. Already, the worlds temperature has
increased . . . [leading to] more frequent droughts and famines . . . higher rates of skin
cancer, and more extreme weather., we are getting end our world, and they dont care about
their next generation about our home.
The Third and the last important consideration of our Social Generation Problems is that
something that have It has its advantages as disadvantages on it, and very popular and
notable, the Technological Advances in our time. Technological advances have occurred at
one of the fastest rates. From the development of the computer and the Internet to mapping
of the human genome, these changes are weighted with both potential and responsibility. In
response to recent advancements, we will be faced with redefining ethical boundaries to
consider issues such as genetic engineering in humans to internet privacy. This privacity
were broken for the low-common sense or intelligence by thinking what going to publicated
in the internet. Thinking about the future and trying to foresee its challenges is difficult and
inexact task. However, the more we consider how our actions today will affect tomorrow, the
more we are able to see that our willingness to implement change and social good will have
a direct impact of solving foreseeable problems.
From a student point of view, and integral part of this generation: a good and my bests
solutions that i can share are the followings: On Inequality Social Problems; It is predicted
that Generation Z and future generations will be stronger advocates for equality. Given their
technological prowess and purpose-driven work ethic, Our Generation certainly have the
tools, potential, and attitude to reduce inequality in our society; accepting different cultures
no matter where they come from. On The Environmental Contamination, we are
responsible for making immediate lifestyle changes that are friendly to the environment.
Making these changes today will ensure that future generations will still have a planet they
can appreciate and care for, or in simple words, watch your home, and your children and
grandchildren. And for the Technological Advances Problems, thinking about the future and
trying to foresee its challenges is difficult and inexact task. However, the more we consider
how our actions today will affect tomorrow, the more we are able to see that our willingness
to implement change and social good will have a direct impact of solving foreseeable
problems.
Let's be a good Millennials Generation, not like The Marshmallow-Eating Generation, looking
their errors and not committed again.
