Keith Herring and Romero Britto Large Pop Art Figures

Class: 5th graders in a fully equipped art classroom

Time Needed:
a. Day 1- Keith Herring and Romero Britto discussion, picking figures, and
starting to draw figures and patterns/designs
b. Day 2- Continuing to draw patterns in figures, and some will be starting to
paint.
c. Day 3- Everyone will start paining
d. Day 4- Continuing painting
Art Background Related to the Lesson: Keith Herring was a famous Pop Artist in
the 80s painting iconic graffiti like figures solid colors. His most famous images
were a baby crawling and a dog barking. Herring images are still seen today, and are
very child friendly. Romero Britto is also a famous Pop Artist that creates large
installation pieces for public places. He uses bright colors and patterned sections to
create beautiful works of art.
Subject: The subject of this lesson is to introduce he 5th graders to Romero Britto in
combination with Keith Herring. (Previous 5th grades have done a simple Keith
Herring project, so all the younger kids in the school know about this project, I just
changed it up a bit.) I will teach the kids about Keith Herring and Romero Britto and
show them examples of their works. Then the students will take what they know
about patterns and designs from their previous project and apply it to this project.

Objectives:
-

Academic Skills
o Following a discussion about Romero Britto, the students will be able
to distinguish his artwork based on the bright and bold colors and the
use of patterns and bold black dividing lines.
o Following a discussion about Keith Herring, the students will be able
to distinguish his artwork based on the bright and bold colors and the
movement lines.

Creative Skills
After looking at examples of Keith Herrings and Romero Brittos
artwork, and talking about some different patterns, the students
should create their figure with dividing lines and patterns and
designs in each section.
85% of students will create their own patterns and designs on their
figures.
Craftsmanship Skills
o Students will demonstrate good craftsmanship skills when they are
drawing their figures. They will be neat with their lines and they will
draw lightly so mistakes can be erased easily.
o Students will demonstrate good craftsmanship when they are painting
their designs. The students will take their time and do their best to try
to not mix paint and paint inside the lines of the designs they have
drawn.

Content Standards:
From the Ohio Department of Education 2012 Visual Art Standards:
1.

2.

2PR: Apply problem soling strategies in he development of

artworks.
Students will have to be aware and think
about how they are going to paint their piece
before they actually start painting because
no 2 colors can be by each other on their
piece.
5PR: Collaborate with peers while showing respect and
support for their ideas and creativity.
The students will be talking to each other,
and looking at each others work while
students are working. Students can talk

about designs and patterns and ideas with

the people they are working next to.

State Standards in Other Disciplines:

1. English/ Language Arts Standards:
Acquisition of Vocabulary- Students will learn new vocabulary
words while doing this lesson, and they will be using them in the
future.

Communication: Oral and Visual Standards- Students will be

communicating with their peers while working. They can talk
about designs and be supportive of others work.

Academic Language:
Pop Art
Romero Britto
Keith Herring
Patterns and Designs
Installations
On the last page of my smart board presentation, I will have the example and inspiration
for this project, as well as my finished example for the children to look at and get ideas
from. I also will be drawing an example in front of the class to show them the scale that
they need to be working on.
Questions to ask the students after discussion:
1. How are Romero Britto and Keith Herrings works
similar? How are they different?
2. By using bright colors and popular figures, what
type of art do you think these 2 artists produce?

Learner Outcomes:
Students will follow the directions for drawing their figures including the
4-5 different sections that are to be filled with different patterns
Students will learn about 2 new artists- Keith Herring and Romero Britto

Students will become more comfortable working with a larger size piece
of paper
Students will follow my challenge of not having the same colors next to
each other when they are painting- requires thinking about their finished
piece as well as the piece in progress
Students will continue to think and use their knowledge about different
patterns and designs.

Safety Considerations:
With students working all around the room, they need to be conscious of
people and their supplies. If paint spills, it needs to be wiped up
immediately. Students will need to slow down and watch where they are
going. Paper on the floor can make it slippery, so students need to be
careful while walking around the room.
Alternatives to the Lesson: After the fist day, if students finish all their drawing and
designs, they may free draw or help other students with their drawing and patterns.
We do not want kids to start painting; we want them to all wait until the 2nd day. No
students should finish painting after the 2nd day. If they did, we need to first make sure
they took their time, and painted correctly. If they did finish, they can help other
students who made lots of designs, and drew a larger figure, paint. (Some students did
not draw the largest figure, so they have a smaller figure to work with.)
Procedure: Introduction:
Day 1:
a. Motivation- My teacher sample will be hanging up on the chalk board. I
also have a smart board presentation talking about Keith Herring and Romero
Britto and showing them examples of each artists work. I will then explain
what we will be doing and how our project breaks up into 3-4 days. I will then
explain what we are doing while showing them on an example that I drew for
the class demonstrating each step as I tell the classes.
e. Step by step process for creating large figure:
1.
Show a demonstration of drawing a large figure. I have
many different examples. I have a Romero figure, a
Herring figure, and a figure that I decided to do- and then
outlawed the students from copying.
2.
I hade one student pass out pencils and one student pass
out erasers.
3.
I had the white paper all ready that I tore off the roll before
class. When I am finished demonstrating, I will have each
table come and get a piece of paper
4.
When the kids get their paper, I will let them spread out
and begin working.

Day 2:
Review the artists that we learned about and remind students that
they need different patterns in their different sections.
1. Pass out pencils
2. Pass out erasers
3. Classes papers will be out on a table. I will read the top
name and when each student gets their paper, they can
spread out and begin working.
4. Students can come to the round table to get their choice of
paint colors. (2 at a time)
Last Day When Everyone is finished, and all the paintings are dry:
1. Pass out black paint
2. Pass out thick brushes
3. Show students how to do the black outline and the
dividing lines
4. Students will do their outlines and dividing lines
5. Lay to dry
**At the beginning of the next class, students will cut out around their black outline and I
will make a display of them around the school to look like graffiti.
c. Teacher-pupil appraisal of activity- If the students remember the artists,
and what is required of them, I will feel that I was successful in teaching them
about 2 artists they have never heard of. The also will remember specific
things about each artists, and how their artwork looks.
Teacher Evaluation: The teacher will feel if the daily goals were accomplished by
how successful the students were in creating their large figure. I will know if the
students were following directions because I can see each of them working. If they
forgot patterns, I will remind them. I will know they were not listening when I was
explaining how 2 colors can not be by each other.
Student Evaluation:
Students will not be given a letter grade on this project, but they will be expected to do
nice 5th grade work. The students will:
1. Follow the directions for drawing figure
2. Do neat painting in each section
3. Have 4-5 sections
4. Has different designs
5. Creativity
6. Uses class time effectively
7. Proper scale of figure- not too small
