of this career?

From seeing nurses watching over


newborn babies after they were born.

2.How did you get

interested in the career?

Enjoyed playing with babies, holding


them, getting to help raise them, and
watching them grow knowing that
you were once a person who was by
their side too made me realize how
fun and warming it was to help take
care of babies.

What is a NEONATAL NURSE?

work with newborn

they are born. Their

from prematurity,
birth defects,
infection, cardiac
malformations, and
surgical problems.

Have well- developed stress management skills as NICU work is
demanding & can be rough on the psyche Be flexible for patient caseload may change from day to day.
Be skilled communicators and educators, particularly when teaching
families how to care for an ill infant.
Pay attention to detail (precise documentation is a large part of NICU nursing,
and sometimes adding special touches to a care regimen can bring great comfort to
patients and their families)

Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Educational
Requirements
-must be registered nurse (RN)
w/ a 4- year bachelor of
science in nursing degree
(BSN)
-be certified in Neonatal
Resuscitation &/or Neonatal
Intensive Care Nursing.
-required to complete
minimum # of years of clinical
experience in hospital setting.
-also need a Master of Science
in Nursing (MSN) degree.
(Many nursing schools offer
this degree through a 2-year
Advanced Practice Neonatal
Nursing (APPN) program. This
type of program will prepare
you for licensure as a Nurse
Practitioner (NP) &/or Clinical

-After completed nursing


school training, must also
become certified by State
Board of Nursing or receive a
national certification from an
agency such as National
Certification Corporation.
