Urinary System: Brief Explanation

Urinary system produces,
stores, and eliminates urine
Also known as the Renal
System it consist of the
kidneys, ureters, bladder,
and the urethra.
Each kidney has millions of
functional units called
nephrons.

Kidneys
The Kidneys are bean-shaped organs
that serve regulatory roles in the
vertebrates.
The kidneys are important to the
urinary system and also gives
homeostatic functions for example
the regulation of electrolytes,
regulation of blood pressure,
maintenance of acid-base balance.
It serves as a natural filter of the
blood.
Removes soluble wastes which are
diverted to the bladder.
In the Bladder the kidneys excrete
wastes such as urea and ammonium.

Nephron: filtration & reabsorption

Reabsorption
This is a form of active
transport. It takes the
important substances for the
body from the tubules which
places them back into the
blood filled capillaries.

Begins with active or

passive extraction

Two step process by

which solutes and water
are removed from a
fluid and transported
into the blood

Transportation of blood

Filtration
Renal corpuscle is
composed out of a
glomerulus enclosed
in a Bowmans capsule
which is where
nephron begins
Nephron; the
functional units of the
kidney that filter our
blood
filtration filters cells,
proteins, This leaves
an ultrafiltrate that
resembles plasma to
entre Bowans space.

Renal System Disorders

Urinary Tract Infections

Occur when bacteria enter urinary
tract
Can affect the urethra, bladder, and
even kidneys
More common in women, but can occur in
men

Symptoms:
Burning feeling when urinating
Frequent or intense urge to urinate
Pain or pressure in back or lower
abdomen
Cloudy, dark, or bloody urine
Drowsiness

Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer begins often in the cells
that line the inside of the bladder.
Bladder cancer typically affects older.
Tumor growth in the bladder
Cause of bladder cancer is not known
yet
Chemicals in environment and
cigarette smoking may play a role
Symptoms

Blood/blood clots in urine

Pain during urination
UTI
Frequently urinating in small amounts

Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease is a
condition mark by a gradual
loss of kidney function in time.
If kidney disease gets worse
the waste can build to high
levels in your blood.
You can may develop different
complications, like anemia,
high blood pressure, weak
bones, and nerve damage.
Kidney Disease increases your
risk of a blood and heart
vessel disease.

Kidney Stones
Stone is formed from crystallization
substances in the urine
May remain in the kidney or break
away and flow to urinary tract
Small stone can travel out of the
body
large stone may get stuck in the
ureter, bladder, or urethra

Symptoms:
Frequent urinating
Extreme or sharp pains in the back or
side
Cloudy or odorous urine
Blood in urine
Burning feeling when urinating
Fever and chills
