ofapotentialappfortheQueenslandPoliceForce.Theintendeduseofthis
appwouldbetoeducatechildrenaboutusingtheInternetsafelyand
appropriately.Theappisintendedtobuildupontheexistingmaterialsupplied
bytheQueenslandPoliceForce,includingcharacters,keywordsandthemes
thathavebeendevelopedwithatheaudienceinmind.
Thisdocumentwillexaminetheprojectandgiveacompleteevaluationofhow
thedesiredappwouldbedesignedandimplementedtogiveitappealtoa
widerangeofchildrenfromasimilaragegroup.Thedocumentwillinclude
userresearchdatafortheapp,thedesignworkandrecommendations,and
theusertestingofthedesign.Thisdocumentwillthereforepresentfindings
onhowdesigninganappforchildrendiffersfromdesigningforanolder
demographic.
Thedocumentscontentsareintendedtopresentourfindingsofhowtheapp
shouldbedesignedandtojustifythesedesignchoicesandhowtheyare
beingusedtoappealtothetargetdemographic.
1.2.Scopeofthisdocument
Thisdocumentisintendedtojustifythedesignofanapptobedevelopedfor
theQueenslandPoliceForce.
Thisdocumentwillincludeadetaileddescriptionofthereasonwhythisappis
beingcreatedandwhattheintendeduseshallbe.Itshallalsoexplorethe
demographicasitstandscurrentlybyidentifyingkeyfeaturesthatare

specificallyusedinothermediatoincentivizeandencourageuseofa
product.Thedocumentwilladdresstheproblemsthatarepresentedinthe
designofthisappandwillproposewaysinwhichtheycanbeovercome.The
intendedoutcomeofthisprojectwillalsobeconsideredsothatthedesign
stagewillhaveadefinedgoalwhichcanbedesignedtowards.Detailsonthe
creationofaprototypewillbeshownandwillimplementthefeaturesthat
havebeenresearchedfortheproject,suchasdesignchoicesmadetoappeal
toaspecificdemographic.
Thisdocumentwillnotdetailanyaspectsthatwouldberequiredtodevelop
suchanapp.Thisincludesbutisnotlimitedtoitemssuchasresourcesand
technicalexpertiserequiredfordevelopment,detailsoncreatingor
maintainingafunctionalapp,informationregardingcopyrightandtrademarks
relatingtocharacters,andestimatesregardingthetimerequiredforthe
creationofanapp.

thesafetyimplicationswhenventuringonline.Thisisalltoleadchildrendown
apathwheretheycansafelyusetheinternetwhilediminishingnegative
influencessuchascyberbullyingwhilstsimultaneouslyincreasingtheamount
ofknowledgesothattheycaneventuallyeducateadultsandwecan
experienceacybersafeculturetheQueenslandPoliceForcehasenvisioned.
Thevaluetotheclientcomesintheformoftheappitselfteachingtheuser
howtobecybersafeduetoanincreasedawarenessandFiscalsfivetips
andtheappconveysthismessageacrossmultipledifferentplatformsthat
includingAndroid,Appleandwindowsphones.Manyyoungerchildrenhave
easyaccesstothiskindoftechnologyandsincetheQueenslandPoliceForce
wishtogetamessageacrossratherthansimplymakingaprofititiseasierto
accomplishthisespeciallyinthisdayandagethroughthisparticularmedium.
Thevaluefortheusercomesintheformofentertainmentandtheknowledge
thisappgivesyouforhowtobesafeinthecyberworld,beingabletolearn
whileenjoyingtheappisveryusefulandwillshowgreatresultforbothparties
involved.

Oneactivityusedtoresearchthisparticulartargetaudiencewasthroughface
tofaceinterviewswithprimaryschoolstudents.Anotherwastheresearchand
analysisofstatisticaldatagatheredbytheAustralianBureauofStatistics.
Lastly,theanalysisofthemarketofpopularchildrensmobileapplicationshad
beenundertakenforagreaterunderstandingtowhatmaybepopular
applicationfeaturesamongourtargetaudience.
ByanalysingthedatagatheredthroughtheABSsurveysandothersources
therehavebeennotablestatisticsthatwillbeusedtohelpensureanappeal
amongtheprimaryaudience.
3.1.
Audiencebeliefs
Theresearchgatheredshowedthatthoughchildrendidhavesomeinterestin
theideaofthecybersafetyprogram,amajorityofchildrenhavebeenfound
tonotreallycareforsuchaprogram.Howeveritwasfoundthatgirls
demonstratedamuchbetterattitudetowardstheprogramduetomanyyoung
boystryingtoexemplifyabadboypersonawhichIfoundtobeverypuerile.
Whenaskedforthoughtsonparticularmobileappspresentedtothem,itwas
foundthatthisaudiencepreferredchildrensappswithmorecolour,
interestingimagesandinteractivity.

Audiencelevels

ThePrimaryLevelaudiencebeingtargetedareprimaryschoolchildrenaged
between512yearsofage.Thisisbecausethetargetoftheentireprogram
hasbeendirectedtowardsthisagegroupduetotheprogramhavingthe
greatestpredictedrateofsuccesswiththisdemographic.
SecondaryLevelaudiencesareadultssuchasparentsandteacherswhocan
recommendtheapptotheirchildren/studentsthatmakeupourprimary
audience.
Themobileapplicationlookstoconsolidatetheexistingclientbasebutaims
toreachagreaternumberofpotentialclientswithinthattargetgroup.
3.3.
Audiencedemographics
IntheABSsurvey,SquareEyesandCouchPotatoes(2012)[1],itwas
discoveredthatatleast80%ofbothboysandgirlsaged514inAustralia
participatedinwatchingTVorotherscreenbasedactivities(includingmobiles
andtheinternet).Thismeansthattheaudiencewillmostlikelybeusedto
consumingalargeamountofcontentthroughappsorwebsites.
Anothersourcerevealedthat90%ofchildrenaged5to14yearsaccessed
theInternetinthe12monthspriortoApril2012[2].Inaddition,95%ofchildren
811havehadaccesstotheinternetinthepast4weekswithnearlyevery
childhavingaccesstotheinternetatsomepointoftheirlives[3].Thismeans
thatourappshouldnothaveissuesbeingusedbyourprimaryaudienceas
theywillmostlikelyhavepriorexperiencewithsimilardesignconcepts.
AsofApril2013,35%ofAustralianchildrenhavemobilephones,anumber
ontheconstantrise[4].Thisbodeswellfortheprogramastherewillbegreat
coverageoftheapplicationbythetargetaudience.
3.4.
Audienceexpectations
Itisassumedthatthisappwillbeusedwiththeexpectationofeducation
throughinteractiveorvisualbasedcomponents.Theeasiestwaytoachieve
thisisthroughaconsistentandclearuseofdesignthroughouttheapp,with
clearwaysofnavigatingtheappsmultiplecomponents.
Theappmustalsobeaccommodatingtoallowfortheprimaryusers(children)
undertheexpectationthattheymaynotknowthepurposeoftheappwhen
initiallyopeningtheapp.Thismeansthattheappmustofferclearvisual
identifierswhichcanbeunderstoodquicklyandwithminimalornoreading
requiredbytheusertoaccesstheeducationalcontent.Toachievethiscolour
schemesanddesignoftheuserinterfacemustbesimpleandallowforusers
toquicklyidentifyandholdobviousmeaning.
Astheaudienceisexpectedtobeyoung,itmustbeassumedthattheywill
reactbettertoshortformcontentandfeedbackintensivecomponents.This
meansthattheappshouldeducatemostlythroughthingsthatwillnottakea
largeamountoftimetoconveyanideaandthattheappwillalwaysrespond
toinputfromtheuserwithfeedbackthatwillmakesensetotheuser.

Itisalsoexpectedthatthedifferentcomponentsoftheappshouldalwaysfeel
consistentindesignandinthewaythattheyreacttouserinput.Theapp
shouldalwaysconveytheideathatitisasingleapplication,andthereforeall
componentsoftheappmustbelogicallyconnectedinthesimplestway
possible.
Whenitcomestoactualapplicationusage,60%ofappsforkidsareinthe
categoryofeducation,with46%ofthatnumberalsobeinginthegame
category[5].Thiscanindicatethatquiteanumberofeducationalappsarein
facthighlyinteractiveasitwillbemoreappealingandenjoyableforyoung
children.

Ourclient,theFraudandCybercrimeUnitoftheQueenslandPoliceService,
isfacingtheproblemofarisingnumberofcasesinvolvingcybercrime.In
responsetothisissue,theclienthasdevelopedtheFiscaltheFraudFighting
FerretCyberSafetyProgramasstatedabove.Thisprogramaimsto
encourageschoolchildrentolearnaboutcybersafety,onlinethreatsand
responsibleonlinebehaviourandtosharethisinformationwiththeirfamilyso
thattheytoocanbenefitfromtheapplication.Wehavebeentaskedwith
developingauserinterfacedesignforamobileappthatprimarilyfocuseson
primaryschoolagedchildrenastheyaretheapplicationsprimaryaudience.
TheQueenslandPoliceForcerequiresthatthedesignbecompletebyFriday,
June5thandincludestheexistingcharactersandartworktheyhaveprovided
topresentFiscalsfivetipstohelpprotectyouridentity.Thisplacesaslight
timeconstraintuponusjoiningthelowbudgetconstraintwearealready
facing.

Ourapplicationwillrequireanextremelyhighlevelofusabilityasitsprimarytarget
audienceareveryyoungprimaryschoolagedchildren.Duetotheexpectedageof
theprimaryaudiencewemustassumethatthesechildrenonlyhavebasicweband
mobilenavigationalskillsandsoitmustbeaseasyaspossibletouse.Successin
achievingthiswillbemeasuredbytheeaseinwhichchildrenareabletonavigatethe
applicationandfindwhattheyarelookingforwithaminimalamountofeffort.A
simplewaytomeasuresuccessinthisareaisbygatheringtogetheragroupof
childrenthatrepresentthetargetaudiencefortheappandaskthemtousethe
applicationandgivetheiropinionsonhoweasyitwastouseorjustiftheyhadany
problemsfindinganythingtheyneeded.
5.2.
Singlemessage
Ifwecanensurethechildrenusingourapprememberonethingitwouldbetotake
thestepsyouneedtoprotectyouridentityonlineandstaycybersafe.Hopefullythey
willalsorememberthattheycanuseourapptofindoutthenecessaryprecautions
thatshouldbetakentoachievethismessage.Inordertoguaranteetheaudience
respondstothegiveninformation,theywillhavetobelievethatthetipswegivethem
canensuretheirsafety.WemustmakethemincontrovertiblytrustFiscalandhis
friendsandbelievetheyknowwhattheyaretalkingabout.Thisway,thechildren
don'tfeelasiftheyneedtofollowthefivestepsbutinsteadthattheywantto
resultinginafarhigherpercentageofsuccessandsincethemessagecomesfrom
QPS,thisaddscredibilitytoyourmessageaswell!
5.3.
Mandatoryelements
Thereareanumberofmandatoryelementstobebuiltintothedesignofthe
application.Amajorityofthesearestraightforwardandareissuedbythe
organisationitself.ThisincludestheQPSlogoaswellastherelevant
informationlinkingthemtothemessageconveyedintheapp.Contact

informationinsituationsofcybercrimeandsuchbehaviouraswellaslinksto
thewebsitearealsonecessaryduetotheirgreatimportance.Another
mandatoryelementisartworkofFiscaltheferretandallthesupporting
charactersasrequestedbytheclientthesewillbeusedthroughouttheapp
toemphasiseandreinforcethemessage.ThefivetipsofFiscalwillalsobe
whattheappwillrevolveitselfaroundandthuswilltakeonadominatingrole
inmanyscreens.Itismandatorythattheappisappealingtoboththeparents
andtheirchildren.Itissaidthatparentswouldbetheonestodownloadthe
appforthechildrenandthereforeitisveryimportantthattheapphasquality
materialandeducationalvalue.Educationalcontentiswhatdrivesparentsto
downloadandpurchasespecificapps.Nearly80%ofthosesurveyedbyPBS
KIDSreportedthateducationalcontentwassomethingtheyconsideredwhen
selectinganappfortheirchild.[6]
5.4.
Deliverables
OncompletionwewouldbeabletodelivertheQueenslandPoliceServicea
highfidelityprototypeoftheapplicationthatshowcasesanintuitiveand
colourfuluserinterfacedesignthatmeetstheirstandards.Theapplicationwill
comewithanumberofimportantdocumentswhichincludethingssuchasa
setofinstructionsonhowtoproperlyusetheapp,aswellasmaintainingthe
app.Inadditiontothosethingsallthesupportingfileswillbegivenincluding
image,videoandsoundfiles.Thisincludesthedesignbrief,detailingtheuser
research,designs,usertestingresultsandthingssuchascopyrightpapers
andothernecessaryformsthatareinvolvedinthemakingofthisapp.
Theunderlyingmessageoftheappwillbetheeducationofchildrenonthe
importanceofcybersafetythroughtheapplicationmediumsubtlyhighlighted
throughthemesandgames.Howthiswillbeaccomplishedisthroughthe
implementationofactivitiesthatwillkeeptheretentionofourselected
audienceinthiscasebeingschoolagedchildrenbetween512.Throughthe
useofawidearrayofinteractiveelementsthathouseacartoonstyle,wewill
encouragethechildrentohavefunandhaveavaluablelearningexperience.

discussedintheprevioussections,meaningthatthedesignsarerobustand

Personas
Personasarepowerfulmodellingtoolsthatusetheinformationfromtheuser
researchstageofthebrieftorepresenttheusersoftheapplication.Theyare
specificmodelsbasedonbehaviouralandmotivationalobservationsmadeon
peoplediscussedintheresearchstage.Itallowstheuserresearchfindingsto
beturnedintosomethingtangible,asthereisaconceptualizationoftheuser.
Itwasconsideredasthebestchoiceasitincludesgoalsthatpeoplehave
whenusingtheapp,taskstheywishtocomplete,whattheproductshould
provideandhowitshouldbehave.Thiswillprovideaclearerideaonhowto
developtheapp.Thistoolalsoprovestobebeneficialasworkcanbetested
usingthepersonaspriortotestingwithrealpeople,whichallowsproblems

6.1.StructuralDesign
Theapplicationopensuptoasplashscreendisplayingmuchoftheartwork
thatwasprovidedtousbytheQueenslandPoliceForcetoimmediately
familiarisetheuserwiththecharacters.Thesplashscreenalsoinformsthe
usertotouchthescreentostartwhichwhendonesowillclosethesplash
screenandtaketheusertothemainmenu.Navigationthroughoutthe
applicationwasintentionallykeptassimpleaspossibleduetotheyoungage
ofthetargetaudience.Thiseasynavigationprinciplewascontinuedintothe
mainmenu.Fromthemainmenuyoucanswipeeitherleftorrightas
indicatedbytheswipeviewatthebottomofthescreen,toreachthetwoother
essentialpagesoftheapplication.Swipingleftbringstheusertotheactivities
pageandswipingtotherightdisplaysthefivetipspage.Theactivitiespage
hasbuttonsthatlinktheusertoeachofthedifferentactivitiesthattheuser
cancompletetoteachthemthefivetips.Eachactivitywillthenhaveitsown
individualpageinwhichtheusercouldcompletetheactivitytokeepthe
applicationinterestingbuttheapplicationsprimaryfocuswastoincreasethe
knowledgeforcybersafety.Inordertoachievethisthetipspagedisplaysall
fiveofFiscalstipsforcybersafety,eachofthesetipsarepresentedona
buttonwhich,whenpressed,willtaketheusertoanotherpagethatgives
themmoreindepthinformationabouteachofthetips.Thisinformation
includesaveryclearexplanationaboutthemessageeachtipistryingto
conveystrategiestheusercanimplementtoachievewhatthetipis
recommendingandalsohowthingscouldimproveifthetipsadvicewas
followed.
Wealsousedmultiplepersonasderivedfrominterviewresultsasan
extremelyusefuldesignelement.Theeighteenintervieweesarefromallthree
ofourtargetaudiencesandwegotveryvariedresultsforexamplechildren
aremotivatedbyenjoyableandinteractiveactivitieswhereastheirparentsare
motivatedbyactivitiesthateducateorimprovetheirchildrenssafety.Based
onthefindingsfromthepersonasitbecamecleartousthatfortheFiscals
fivetipstobesuccessfultheapplicationmustteachchildrenhowtobecyber
safebutitmustalsobeanenjoyableexperience.Wemademanyofour
designchoicesbasedoffthepersonasaswellastheinformationgathered
fromabrainstormingsession

6.2.VisualDesign
Thegenerallayoutofmostpagesconsistsofatitleatthetopasthisisthe
generalplacementtoallowpeopletounderstandthecontextofthepage.The
maincontentofthepageisplacedinthemiddleofthepageasthisiswhere
theeyeisdrawntowhenfirstlookedat.
Visualelementsthatarecarriedeachpagewouldincludethedesignelements
ofhavingthebluecoloursasanoninteractiveelementwhereasorangeare
abletobeinteractedwith.
TheiconsintheappincludetheQPDLogoasthisisadesignfeaturethat
mustbeincludedduetotheirinvolvementbutonlyappearsatthestartupof
theapplication.Someothericonsareplacedasawayofdistinguishingwhat
aparticularfeaturedoesassomeofourtargetaudiencesabilitytoreadmay
notbesuitablewhenfiguringouttheactivitiespurposesthereforegivenvisual
cues.
ThegraphicsintheapplicationincludedFiscalandBacchusastheywere
necessarydesignelements,buttheuseofthemwewereabletolinktheir
importanceandmeaningofcybersafetytofunactivities.Theirinclusiongives
childrensomethingtorelateto.
Forthevisualdesignacertainstyleframeworkwasfollowedinordertogive
theuseragoodexperience.Thiswasdonebyaimingforacleanpagelimiting
toomuchtextandpictureasourmaintargetaudiencethiswouldallowusto
keepattentionandlimitdistraction.
Thecolourofthepagesisgeneralthroughouttheapplicationconsistingofa
bluebackgroundduetoitsabilitytobeabletohavebothBacchusandFiscal
beeasilyseenontopwithoutclashing.Thecolourbluealsohasassociations
withwisdomandintelligence,whichrelatetowhatisneededforbeingableto
keepcybersafe.Theorangeaspectsoftheappwerechosenasitcanbe
easilyseenonthebluebackgroundanddoesntclashwiththegraphics.The
colourofthetextwaswhiteduetoitsabilitytobeeasilyreadableand
identifiableovertheothercolourschosen.
Thefontscarriedoverforeachpageintheapp.Forthetitlesofeachpage
Ahroniwasusedasitiseasilyreadableandcontrastedwellwiththegraphics
styleandtheothertext.FortextotherthanthetitleCalibri(body)wasused
thisisbecauseitworkedwellwiththetitletextandthestyleofthegraphics
used.

6.3.Prototypes
Ithasbeendecidedthatmultipleiterativeprototypeswillberequiredtoensure
thatthebrainstormingandpersonasarefullyutilizedinwaysthatmake
sense.Alsorequired,istheabilitytosharetheprototypewithothersandto
allowotherstomakeupdatesifneeded.Thereforeitwasdecidedthatthe
prototypewouldbecreatedwithMicrosoftOfficePowerPoint.
PowerPointwaschosenduetoitseaseofuseandthefactitisinstalledona
largenumberofcomputersalongwiththeothercomponentsofMicrosoft
Office,whichisinstalledonmostcomputers.Tocreatetheprototypeeach
slidewastreatedasaseparatescreen,withbuttonsinsideeachslideusedto
linktodifferentslides.Someofthebuttonsintheprototypeareusedas
substitutesforgestureswhereappropriate,thoughmostareusedtoshow
whatscreenwouldbemovedtowhenanelementistapped.Tousethe
prototypeasintendedtheuserneedstoviewtheslideshow.
Transitionbetweenslide2,toslide4aftertheswipeleftbuttonispressed
Theprototypeswerealsousedtoensurethatelementsthatweredecided
uponinthevisualandstructuraldesignworkedinsideanappandtoensure
thatelementscouldbeimprovedeasily.Ifasuperiordesignwasproposeda
newiterationwasmadetoensureitmadesensewhenputinanapp.

Inaninitialversionoftheprototype,asimplestructurewasfunctionalandlittle
else.Thismeantthatitcouldbetestedtoensurethattheearlystructurethat
wasdecideduponwouldworkinanapp.Italsowasmadetoensurethat
PowerPointwascapableofbeingusedtocreateafunctionalprototype.This
lowfidelityprototypewasusedtohaveanexampleofthebasicfunctionality
andlayoutoftheapplication.
Whenthevisualdesignelementsweredecidedupon,ahighfidelityprototype
wasmadetotestifthestructureandthevisualdesignworkedtogether.
