Dear Ms. Eckersall-Mendez and Ms. Sherrod,
Nelson Mandela once said, education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change
the world. I share this view, which drives my passion for education. I believe that all students have the
ability to succeed, and that education can truly change the world.
I have an extraordinary passion for education, and relevant experience in the classroom. My
undergraduate degree prepared me for teaching elementary-aged students. This June I anticipate
completion of my Master of Education degree in Urban Teaching. My experience with National Louis
University and the Academy for Urban School Leadership at National Teachers Academy have further
prepared me for a career as an educator.
My year-long training as a resident teacher has given me the skills necessary to be an effective
urban teacher:
Establishment of effective behavior management and classroom incentive and
consequence systems.
Utilization of data to inform instruction and create differentiated instructional groups.
Implementation of multiple engagement strategies during lessons, including use of
whiteboards, gestures, and think-pair-share.
Attendance at multiple professional development sessions to refine my practice and
learn new strategies.
My experience has given me the skills to push my students to use their most powerful weapon:
education. I believe my passion for teaching and learning will make me a positive addition to your school.
I look forward to speaking with you further about my qualifications. Thank you for your time and your
consideration.
Sincerely,
Ashley OShaughnessy
