Introduction
The aim of this assignment is to write a reflection about an interview with
a person who works in the same position that interests me, and then do a
research on the requirements and responsibilities in order to compare them
with the job interview.
A position that interests me is electrical technologist, so an interview was
conducted with a person who used to work in the same position to ask him
about the requirements needed in order to get the same job in that field.

BODY
Questions
The meeting that was conducted was with an electrical engineer in
BAPCO. it was on the 1st of April 2015.in this meeting many questions were
asked regarding the job companies, this section will include the questions,
and answers The first question was How did you get the job ?
he earned a diploma in electrical engineering at BTI. After that, he
found a job in BAPCO as an assistant engineer (technician). He said
that he did his best to show his supervisor that he deserve to get a
scholarship to complete his studies , and get bachelor in electronics
engineering. Then, BAPCO sent him to university of Portsmouth in the
United Kingdom. He spent four years in the UK until he earned
bachelor in electrical and electronics engineering. then he came back
to Bahrain, and he was placed in his company as an electrical
technologist.
In terms of education , and knowledge what are the requirements needed to
be an electrical engineer in BAPCO?
bachelor in electronics engineering technology / bachelor of science in
electrical engineering.
knowing common things about electrical engineering. For example, the
relationship between voltage, current, and resistance.
What are the skills needed in BAPCO that allows me to be an engineer ?
being able to speak English, because there are many foreigners in
BAPCO, so having good communication skills will engorge me to have a
place in BAPCO.
Skills in writing reports about tasks being done in the workspace. The
report has to be written in technical form , and in details because the
supervisor needs to know exactly what the problem is , and how it was
solved.

engineering skills such as being able to read the color code of a

resistor, capability of using soldering station. Read and understand
schematic circuits. Moreover, capability with using machines such as
lathe , milling , and drilling machines.

Do I need to have work experience in field of electrical engineering in order

to be engineer in BAPCO?
it is not necessary to have an experience in the field of engineering,
but having experience will increase the probability of getting a job in
BAPCO.
What skills/ knowledge you got when you joined BAPCO?
Working in BAPCO will allow learning new things about other field of
engineering such as mechanical and instrumentation. For example,
The pumps that are using in BAPCO contained valves, and some
sensors. So in order to supply power to them, it is important to know
about the theory, and the characteristics behind them, and this will
allow the engineer to gain knowledge about different field of
engineering.
Improving my communication skills, because BAPCO have many staff
from different countries.
are you going to apply what you have learned in the university in the work
space?
not everything that was learned from university will be applied in the
work space. things like math , and fabrication is allowed, but when it
comes into manufacturing new electric circuits, then it will be difficult, as
it is required a lot of operation. So they go for purchasing instead of
manufacturing .
How do I get a job in as an electrical technologist in BAPCO or any other
companies that have this department
Bachelor in electrical/electronic technology
Answering most of the question in the interview
Any experience in the same field I have will increase the probability of
getting the job.
What are the barriers, and difficulties you face in the job
Troubleshooting new equipment because they have to open the
equipment, and study the circuit inside the equipment.
Communicating with people who have hard strong English accent.
Teaching the new trainees, because in BAPCO the electrical engineers
deals with voltage higher than 500V which a high amount of voltage ,
and it is dangerous. So they should care about these trainees.

Research
This section will discuss the job competencies needed that help the
graduated student to find job in the field of electronics engineering . the

information that was obtained are from several website. The requirements
needed in order to be an electronics engineer can be classified into the
following categories

In term of education, according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics, There

are some universities that offers two years program of electrical
engineering technology. In these two years, the student will be able to
study the power electronics, control systems, electrical machines, the
theory of AC circuits, and some programming courses such as
programmable logic control which is widely used in the industry.

The qualification skills that an electronics engineer must have

are(CAREER GUIDE FOR ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN, n.d.):
Locate the errors and problems and deciding what is the solution.
mathematic skills to solve problems
using logical methods and rules to solve problems
explore desires and products to build a circuit design
Understanding which solution can be better than the others.
the knowledge that an electronics technologist must have are (CAREER
GUIDE FOR ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN, n.d.) :
the basic parts such as: computer hardware, processors, chips,
breadboard and programming (C++, Matlab, LabView....)
ability to use tools , and machines such as drilling , and milling.
Engineering Symbols and words
knowledge in mathematics such as calculus, algebra, geometry
and their applications.
the knowledge to use instruments such as soldering stations.

Analysis:
Having researched the requirements to be capable of performing the job of
an electronic technologist and having also interviewed an engineer in BAPCO,
I have noticed that there are many similarities in what both sources said. The
main similarities are regarding the point that I should have complex problem
solving skills and be able to solve them in the best way possible.
Communication is another factor which is essential according to both the
interview and the research. However, there were some differences as the
research showed that I should also have knowledge of engineering software
such as Matlab and LabView. This point was not mentioned during the
interview and I believe that this was mainly due to the person whom I

interviewed as software didn't seem to be in his thoughts and preferences.

The research shows many skills and requirements that someone who aspires
to be an engineering technologist should possess but when interviewing
some, he may mention the points that are directly related to his work and
work experience, and given that the person I interviewed does not deal with
software, I believe that this led to him not mentioning the software
requirements and this is an example of a factor that determines a difference
between information that's gathered by doing an interview to that gathered
from research.

Conclusion:
Given my academic qualifications and life experiences I think this job
suits me as I am a secondary school graduate and I am in the final year
of studying to graduate with a bachelor of electronic and electrical engineering
degree. I have good mathematical skills which enables me to solve complex engineering
problems. I can fluently read, write and speak Arabic and English. Additionally, my
engineering experiences as a last year engineering student enable me to locate errors and
problems in addition to using logical and modern methods in order to solve them in the
best way possible. However, I think that I lack some work experience because I have
learning experience only and I am aware that this is not enough to be completely
proficient in engineering. This lack of experience can only be filled by working and this
is why I am very interested in this job and do not intend to consider other alternatives.
