Biographical Sketch Abstract:
Ray Cole Hillman was born in July 25, 1928. After serving a mission in Sweden, he was a
PsiWar research assistant during the Korean War. He received his Ph.D. in international relations
from American University in 1964. As a political science faculty member, he served for nine
years as department chair and six years as the director of the Kennedy Center for International
Relations. He was a Fulbright scholar to Vietnam, Taiwan, and China.
Scope Abstract:
The collection was primarily created in Ray Cole Hillmans work as a faculty member at
Brigham Young University from 1955-2008. These include a variety of documents, including
information on BYUs spy scandal, three sabbaticals (Vietnam, Taiwan, and China), and
Hillams tenure as director of the Kennedy Center.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Ray Cole Hillman was born in July 25, 1928 in Carlin, Nevada to James and Mabel (formerly
Cole) Hillam. He served a mission to Sweden from November 1948 to July 1951. He served in
army during the Korean War from May 1952 to April 1954 as a Psychological War research
assistant, after which he met and married Carolyn Sanders. They had six children. Hillam
received his bachelors degree from the University of Utah in 1955, his masters from George
Washington University in 1958, and his Ph.D. in international relations from American
University in 1964. He was a Chinese foreign documents analyst for the CIA before becoming a
political science faculty member at Brigham Young University. During his time at BYU, Hillman
was a Fulbright scholar to Vietnam (1966-1967), Taiwan (1973-1974), and China (1992-1993).
He was chair of the political science department for nine years, director of five study abroad
programs, and director of the Kennedy Center for International Studies from 1985-1991. Having
retired in 1993, he received the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award, the Phi Kappa

Phi Faculty Award, the Virginia F. Cutler Faculty Lecture Award, and the Karl G. Maeser
Citizenship award.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection was primarily created in Ray Cole Hillmans work as a faculty member at
Brigham Young University, primarily from 1960-1993, though the entire collection spans from
1955-2008. The collection includes class schedules, lists and syllabi; notes for various classes,
lectures, research classes, or on articles and books; correspondence and memos; items collected
during or about conferences, trips, sabbaticals (Vietnam, Taiwan, and China), and study abroad
trips (London and Europe) including photos and scrapbooks; and information on the founding of
the Kennedy Center for International Studies. Of particular interest is documents regarding
BYUs spy scandal and Hillams papers collected while director of the Kennedy Center.
