OHSU Dietetic Interns

Project Objectives:
Development Objective1: Attendees of the OWLA meeting will deem the
module fit for training purposes as evidenced by
responses on an evaluation form.
Implementation Objectives- Upon completion of
the educational module, participants will be able
to:
1: Describe the history and process of HDM
banking.
2: Describe HMBANA guidelines for safe handling
of HDM after completion of the continuing
education module, as evidenced by at least an
80% on an evaluation quiz.
3: List 3 benefits of properly handled HDM, as
evidenced by an overall passing score of 80%.

Project Mentors:
Joanne Ransom, RN, IBCLC
Lesley Mondeaux, RNC, IBCLC

Project Significance:
Human Donor Milk (HDM) is the best feeding
option for infants that are pre-term or in the
NICU and not able to receive their own
mothers milk.
Human Milk Bank Association of North America
(HMBANA) guidelines must taught because:
o They may not always be followed in clinical
settings
o May be more strict than some hospitals
policies & procedures.
This education will save money for hospitals
because infants:
o Fed properly handled HDM have quicker
healing rates
o Have less chance of complications and
surgeries
o Spend less time in the hospital

Project Goal:
Provide an online continuing education module
to all dietitians, nurses, and lactation
consultants handling HDM in clinical settings to
ensure safe handling and distribution to infants.
