The Governing of the United States:

• What is an amendment? Is the act of changing correcting the constitution

• Why was the democratic system set up? the Fifteenth Amendment gave
black Americans the right to vote,
and the Nineteenth Amendment gave women the same right. Today all
American citizens over the age of 18 can vote.

• Name the three branches of the federal government.

The Executive,
The Legislature - the Congress, and
The Judiciary

• What are the main functions of the three branches?

The Executive proposes laws, appoints federal judges and senior officials. It is
also responsible for relations with foreign countries. Its actions must usually be
approved by Congress.

The Congress is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. This
is where new federal laws are made,
federal taxes are set, and also, this is the only branch entitled to declare war on
other countries.

The main function of the Judiciary is to make sure that the actions of the
President and Congress are in accordance with
the Constitution
