My
Mydear
Dearparishioners,
Parishioners,

This mini-casebook is the product of many months of work done by our parishs Project Planning
Committee. Our hope is that the plan this booklet contains is not only attainable but will also respond to
the physical plant needs of our parish that were addressed in last years Feasibility Study.
As we offer this plan, we realize that it represents a project that will benefit not only our present
generation of parishioners but future generations as well. To that extent, we ask that you see in this
project an opportunity for you to support your parish as together, we respect our past and look to our
future. In that light, when you are approached to consider a financial contribution to this project, I ask
that you prayerfully respond with an open and generous heart.
In closing, we here at St. Marys have truly been blest by God! Our parish has so many good and faithful
members, a great Religious Education program, an active Knights of Columbus Council, individuals
who serve the needs of our Grinnell community, an energetic group of youth and the list goes on and on
I sincerely hope that you would therefore see the plan presented in this casebook as a way by which
you can show gratitude to God for what he has already done for us; and as a way for us to continue
doing our part in building up the Kingdom of God in our midst. May God bring to fruition the work we
now begin!
Sincerely,
(signature from Jay: Fr. Nick)

How We Got Here

In 2011, we started the process to determine our immediate
and future needs for our physical facilities at St. Marys.
An initial Town Hall Meeting was held and a determination
was made to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study. In
February 2012 a series of nineteen informational meetings
were held to test for a potential $4.2 million Capital Campaign.
The results from this study showed a very favorable response to
initiating a Capital Campaign, but not at the financial level to
successfully complete the project in one phase.
Back to the drawing boards we went to develop a strategy to
achieve our needs without sacrificing the integrity of the
proposed plans.
We are now prepared to move forward into a $2.3 million
Capital Campaign, as a first step in the attainment of our
Parish dream.

DIOCESE OF DAVENPORT

February 2013
Dear Parishioners of St. Marys Parish,
For over 130 years, St. Marys Catholic Church has been serving the greater Grinnell
community. The people of St. Marys have demonstrated a deeply rooted
commitment and an active Catholic faith as the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been
proclaimed in word and deed.
Guided by the Spirit of God and based upon the conclusions and recommendations
gathered from your feasibility study, you are now ready to move forward with your
vision of a capital campaign for a new parish hall.
My congratulations on your willingness to finalize this commitment for your future.
You have my wholehearted support and prayers in successfully going forward with
Respecting Our Past and Reaching for Our Future.
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Rev. Martin Amos

Commemorative
Opportunities
A commemorative gift allows a family to honor a loved one,
alive or who has passed away, by recognizing their name in
conjunction with our building project. A commemorative
gift does not buy or pay for the item of the new or
remodeled facilities. It does not imply that the family
owns that portion of our project. Nor does requesting a
commemorative opportunity limit how the funds you
contribute can be used. Rather, when a family reaches a
level specified, they are afforded the opportunity to connect
a family members name with this historic time in our faith
community.
The levels to qualify for different opportunities are not
designed to reflect the actual costs to build but rather the
prominence and/or the historical or spiritual significance
the component has in the overall project. Opportunities are
granted on a first-request basis.

Commemorative opportunities will be provided to

encourage multi-year pledges and sharing of gifts by family
members. Commemorative gifts will be recognized in an
appropriate location in the new facilities. Listed on the next
page are some commemorative opportunities and the total
amount needed to qualify for a commemorative
opportunity.

Explanation of Pledges
A pledge is a written indication of a commitment made as a lump-sum
payment or an amount paid over a number of years.
Five-year Commitment
A five-year commitment is the most common method to maximize this
project and is made with monthly, quarterly, or annual payments. For
some, there may be a desire to make a significant one-time, lump-sum
payment to best suit the familys abilities.

Securities
Gifts of appreciated stock, securities, or paid-up life insurance policies
offer significant tax savings to the donor. They are credited at the mean
fair market value the day the appreciated security is gifted. The capital
gains tax may be avoided.

Gifts of Farm Commodities

Donation of actual product that can be sold with the proceeds
benefiting the campaign in the form of a gift. Examples include bushels of
corn, soybeans, or sale of livestock.
In-kind Gift
Providing of goods or services that directly impact the building project
itself. Some examples of this type of pledge would be the donation of
materials for the construction, providing hardware or software needs for
technology, HVAC improvements, donations of furnishings, or electrical
fixtures, or the donation of labor necessary to complete the project by a
licensed, qualified, skilled individual or firm accepted by the contractor.

Corporate Matching Gift

Some companies or their affiliates may match gifts to St. Marys,
doubling or tripling the gifts impact. Frequently, match gifts are available
to both current and retired employees. St.Marys will work with you in
contacting your employer to obtain the forms to maximize your campaign
contribution.
It is our hope that you and your family will select the best method to
allow you to maximize your gift. Remember that all gifts toward this
campaign will be fully tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Gracious and loving God, we offer you our humble gratitude for the
countless gifts and blessings you bestow on us as parishioners of St.
Marys Church. Your constant kindness and compassion is the
source of our hope and the light in our times of decision.
We especially call upon your mercy at this time in the history of our
parish to lead us, direct us and guide us as we determine our future.
We know that your Spirit will always strengthen us whenever we call
upon you and so, with confidence and trust, we ask you to hold
our hand as we begin this potential project for our parish.
Grant us listening hearts, that our every step may be guided
only by your will and your plan.
Grant us a deep and abiding faith, that we may respond
to your call with generous hearts.
Grant us the constant guidance of your Holy Spirit, that this
plan may reflect our love for you and for one another.
Grant us a joyful spirit of unity, cooperation, and solidarity, that we
may work together as a family united in your Son, Jesus Christ.
And grant us an unfailing hope at all times, that every day
may bring us closer to your Kingdom.
Through the intercession and protection of our parish patron,
the Blessed Virgin Mary, we ask you to hear this prayer
and to fulfill it according to your will.
With thankful and humble hearts, we make our prayer
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
