Mergers and takeovers

A merger is when two companies decide to join together. This helps them
achieve greater sales of revenue and greater market share.
An example of a Merger within the media industry was when Time Warner
merged with AOL for $111 million. Their aim was to combine ideas and combine
to have more success together, generating more of a revenue and more market
share. However, this merge of companies was unsuccessful because they were
very different companies and Time Warners stock has dropped 80%. Then, this
past May, the CEO of Time Warner, Jeff Bewkes, embarrassingly announced that
the marriage of AOL and Time Warner was finished.
Another example of a merger was between Time Inc and Warner communications
in 1990 which ultimately formed the multinational company Time Warner which
was really successful.
A takeover is when a company buys out a rival company. An example of this
within the film industry is how the Walt Disney Corporation bought Pixar
Animation studios in 2006 for $7.4 billion. This happened because at the time
Pixar was doing better with animation, they had more popular films and
characters and Disney was making a loss in animation. After buying out Pixar
they did better with rights to some of their most famous films like Toy Story,
Cars, The Incredibles, etc. Then, after Disney bought them, they created sequels

to Toy Story and other films, such as Bolt and Ratatouille. Buying Pixar
subsequently made Disney money because they ha rights to all the most famous
films; Toy story and could combine their work with Pixar to make more popular
animated films that people wanted to see.
