Data Analysis
This document will show some of the information concerning how the
demographics have affected the answers with some analysis of some of the pie
charts to try and understand why the demographics change the answer to such
a degree in certain situations.
An individual is planning an attack that aims to take the lives of innocent
people. Destroying the individual will neutralise the attack, and a drone can
readily be deployed to carry this out. Do you approve deployment of a
drone?
The percentage of people who approve the drone deployment remain
constant across all age groups. This shows that the people are likely to agree if
it means a threat will be neutralised.
40+ = 70.8% approved
26-40 = 72.2% approved

The individual will be at a large event, which may attract several thousand
innocent people. Do you still deploy the drone to destroy the individual,
knowing that the lives of thousands of innocents are at risk?
As soon as innocents are at risk there is a huge decrease in the number of
people who approve of the drone deployment. In each age group approval

decreased by at least 50%, which shows that the people do not want innocent
people to be harmed whilst neutralising the individual.

An active conflict has displaced a number of refugees who are in need of

supplies. There are members of your armed forces who are engaged in
combat who also need resupply. Supplies need to be carried by helicopter
and there is only one available. Do you authorise supplies to be sent to the
troops or to the refugees?
The under 25s are more likely to support the refugees without any more
information, however, the troops had an overwhelming support from all 3 age
groups.

Disease has broken out amongst the refugees, who are starving and
desperately thirsty. Without medicine many of them will not recover and the
death rate may be high. Do you deploy the supplies to the refugees rather
than the troops?
As the refugees worsen in health more people are likely to redirect supplies
from the troops to the refugees. Support for the refugees is highest amongst
18-25 year olds, but it only increased by approximately 15%, whereas both the
40+ and 26-40s increased their support for the refugees by a larger margin, the
former by approximately 35% and the latter by approximately 25%.

An individual is suspected of being a credible threat to national security and

your governments intelligence community wants to monitor their emails. Do
you approve the monitoring?
According to the data that we have collected, males are less likely to approve
of monitoring an individual, both in terms of percentage compared to the rest
of the respondents and the percentage of males within themselves. This shows
that males are more likely to be against monitoring emails and people from the
undisclosed category are seemingly the most receptive to email monitoring.

During the monitoring evidence is gathered which shows financial

irregularities; they have been involved in insider trading. Is it acceptable to
use the data gathered for a prosecution?
The over 40s are the happiest with the use of the information for the insider
trading with the 18-25s and 26-40s preferring their privacy. All 3 linger around
the 50% mark though showing that it is a grey area for many people as the
monitoring is leading to a separate prosecution. The surprising figure is that
the 26-40s approval rating was lower than the 18-25, than we predicted from
the information we have found from Pew Research Centre (see
http://www.people-press.org/files/legacy-pdf/06-1013%20PRC%20WP%20Surveillance%20Release.pdf ,p6), there would be a
steady decrease as computer privacy is seemingly more important to the
youngest people, who are more likely to be using computers to store more
personal information.

The monitoring is closed and the intelligence agency wishes to retain the
data gathered in case of future threat. No evidence has been gathered of
their being a threat to national security, but there is sensitive information
which would make them open to blackmail, such as medical records, proof of
marital infidelity or sexual orientation. Do you approve retaining the data?
The data shows that the 18-25 are the most supportive of retaining the data
despite the fact that the individual has not been proven to be a threat, which is
very surprising, as they had the lowest percentage of people approving of the
monitoring in the first place, with 77.5% to 83.333% and 80.556% for 40+ and
26-40 respectively but may not seem as surprising as they had the highest
approval rating for expanding the monitoring.
