MEET YOUR MENTORS.

1. There will always

be someone better
than you. You will
meet people with
incredible skills that far
surpasses yours. There
will be someone who
knows everything,
someone who can create
amazing works of art,
someone incredibly gifted
in public speaking, or
someone who is full of
charisma. Befriend
them, and learn from
them, their techniques,
their method. You will
be jealous, but continue
improving yourself until
your idols become
your rivals. Do not look
down on yourself
though, because just as
there will always be
someone better than
you..

2. there will
always be someone
worse off than you.
You might be absolutely
horrible at sketching,
but your expertise in
public speaking will
shine, and your fellow
mates will respect
you for that. you will
definitely meet someone
who is just not as good
as you, and it will be
your responsibility to
help them, in the
same way you requested
and received help from
those better than you.
because in this course

LEARNING
together.

Through my personal
experience in FNBE, it is
much way different
than any experience
as compared to high
school. Besides, FNBE
serves as a basic
fundamental stepping
stone into introducing
students into the
construction world in
terms of architecture.
As we all know from
day one architecture
course - FNBE is an
assignment based
course and less
exam base subject.
This allow us students
to explore our own
creativity and
innovation towards
into creating and
designing stuffs rather
than just

referring to text books

like what it used to be
like back in high school.
Through FNBE, I
experience a lot of
fascinating
experience ranging
from built environment
to natural environments
and even performance.
Site visits are common
experiences for me as it
is a basic requirement
for us in order to
survey, analyze and
understand the site
before a project proposal
is being set up for it.
Through that site visits
are always awesome as
it not only ensure us
the greater learning
experience outdoor but
also help strengthen
our bond with each
other as an intake.

Time management is
also a crucial point
that is to be noted.
Efficient planning will
affect you in how
well one could
perform in your
assignments as the
amount of workload is
always a lot.
As mentioned before it
is an assignment based
course so there will be
fewer exams. So in
order to succeed in this

treat

FNBE APRIL 2014

There things I've learnt

during FNBE:
1. Architecture is
more than just
buildings. There are
many components that
makes what architecture
what architecture is.
And to be able to get a
grasp on all of that,

it's important to
learn and get the
basics right.

2. Prepare to work
hard and work smart
NOT for the grades,
but for all the possible
amazing projects that
you will take on.

3. Be bold with your

ideas but at the same
time research is key
to support and refine
your ideas.
Always be open to new
things and always be
open to learn new
things from your
friends, seniors and
lecturers.
You'll never know
everything and you'll
never will.

3) Pick up a skill, any

and the open door to

characteristics about
you that people
notice and want.
What kind of group

1. Studying in FNBE is
not like studying in
high school. In high
school, studying is
memorizing facts and
techniques to get the
one and correct answer
in questions; but in
FNBE, no, you have to
apply what you have
learnt into solving
problems and the
lecturers will not tell
you the answer. You
have to figure it out
yourself. However, unlike
high school, there are
millions of
possibilities to
complete an
assignment and you
have to implement
justifications and
persuade the
lecturers to believe
what you believe is
right.

2. Never

procrastinate.

Whenever you have time

and resources, just do
it!
Have a planner to
remind yourself of the
deadlines of assignments
and keep yourself a
to-do list, it really
helps a lot in terms of
planning.

Planning is
important. Make sure
that everything planned
and done is NOT
contradicting with
the brief.

3. Effort is very
important and FNBE
requires a lot from it.
Never ever think that
something is too-much
or too troublesome.
Whenever you have a
plan that is wellthought-out, just do it!
Dont slack!
Communicate and
interact more with
lecturers and
teammates, utilize
the weekly tutorial
sessions well.
Show every progress
you have during the
tutorials, it will help
a lot in improving
the final outcome.

Despite of the countless

get when you

keeps you going on.

The 3Ps .
Pressure.
Patience.
Passion.

Pressure starts to
kick in when
youre so close to
the submission yet

so far from generating

ideas. Its okay to
make mistakes. We
dont always get things
right at the first time.
And re-doing is
OKAY. It happens all
the time. You can be
doing the same model
gazillion times yet still
getting rejected by the
tutor during tutorials.

The biggest contrast

between high school and
foundation : THERES
NO MORE SPOON
FEEDING! This
foundation requires us
to learn through

exploration and
critical thinking.

Want to get certain

information? Inspiration?

Do your own
research! Unlike high

school, theres no
homework or whatsoever
and fewer exams.

We also see things from

a different perspective
compared to high school.

You no longer see

buildings as a
structure, but
more of a
masterpiece that
is defined through
elements and
principles.

Theres no
limit in design.
It just gets
wilder.

So learning in fnbe
Is to:

be an independent learner
take initiative and be interested in
what you do
Be open to criticism because it is
part of learning process (through
presentation & tutorial, feedbacks)
there is no one possible way of doing
things.

Its not about the GRADES but its is

about how much you learn
