Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: Student will come into the classroom and grab their journal and
direct their attention to the white board.

1.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures: Before I begin to explain present tense I

will refresh my student on verbs. I will ask the student what is a verb and explain
to the student that verbs can be used in a sentence in 3 different ways in the form
of verb tense. I will then help the student understand the simple present, past and

future tenses of a verb by explaining each one and give an example. I will write
on the board;
Present tense: The verb shows action that happens regularly.
Example: Brandon plays football with Lee.
Or Brandon is always playing
Past tense: The verb shows action that happened.
Example: I wrote a story about animals.
Or I talked about an animal story. Or Selena Quintanilla was a famous Latin
singer
Future tense: The verb shows action that will happen.
Example: Lisa will read to us.
2. Once I have gone over the examples, I will write a few words on the board and
ask the student to tell me which verb tense is the word. Then I will ask her to use
the word in a sentence. The student will then write the sentence in their journal. I
will continue this process 2 more times.
3. I will give the student a worksheet called Learning about verb tenses. We will go
over the first 5 sentences together and then the student will work independent on
on Practice 1.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Repeat the directions to make sure

the student has a clear understanding of the assignment. Monitor student progress and
assist students as needed.
Reteach (alternative used as needed): Help the student to refer back to the
board for examples of verb tense. This will help the student to remember what they have
learned.

Closure: Pose a question, for example, what will you do when you get home from
school. This will help students to think and gather their ideas and it will allow me to ask
the student which verb tense I was using.
Assessment/Summative Evaluation: This assignment will be graded and applied to ELA
writing daily grade.
