Open Text expects the monitoring tools to be transparent for the OpenText Archive Server software.
For Open Text customers who have a support agreement, Open Text will use reasonable efforts to
investigate potential issues with Open Text software running with monitoring tools. As part of that
investigation, Open Text may require that the issue be reproduced independently from the monitoring
products. Where issues are confirmed to be unrelated to the monitoring software, Open Text will
support its software in a manner that is consistent with support provided when that software is not
running in such an environment.

6 Recommendations and Scenarios

6.1

Host names of Archive Server

See Knowledge Base article Renaming an Archive Server 10.5 Computer

6.2

Time settings

All computers (servers and clients) must use a central time server.
Times returned by the OpenText Archive Server are in UTC (coordinated universal time).

6.3

Antivirus software

To archive virus-free documents, you must protect the documents from viruses before archiving.
Archive Server does not perform any checks for viruses. To ensure error-free work of OpenText
Archive Server, locations where documents are stored temporarily like disk buffer partitions, cache
partitions, and Document Pipeline directories must not be scanned by any antivirus software while
Archive Server is using them.

6.4

Passwords

The minimum length for passwords of users administered by OpenText Archive Server 10.5 is
8 characters.

6.5

Volume migration

Remote Volume Migration is supported:

- from Archive and Storage Services 9.7.1, Archive Server 10.1.1
Note: If you want to use Remote Volume Migration in other scenarios, contact your Open Text
Professional Services department.
It is strongly recommended to use 1 Gigabit Ethernet connection between source and target system.

6.5.1 Ports in use for Remote Volume Migration

See Knowledge Base article (Ports in use for Remote Volume Migration Article number):
https://knowledge.opentext.com/go/15642716

6.6

Storage Quotas

Quotas imposed by the operating system on storage platforms are not supported.
Note: This does not apply to quotas imposed by the storage system itself. Storage systems with
quotas must behave like a normal disk partition.

OpenText Archive Server 10.5 Release Notes

17

6.7

Archive Server Configuration Parameters

Adding new configuration variables in the Administration client under Archive Server / Configuration is
not supported.

6.8

Disk buffer

Local disks or SAN disks have to be used for disk buffers. Dynamic disks are not supported.

6.9

Archive Server HW Recommendation

Minimal hardware requirements for productive installations of Archive Server including local
database:

Archive Server has to be hosted on 64 bit hardware.

Memory recommendation for all supported Operating systems:
minimum 8GB; recommended 16GB
CPU recommendation: at least 4 cores
Provide more CPU Power/Memory Important for single Instance Archiving, compression,
encryption, creation of ISO images.
Minimum hard disk requirement 1 TB, several, multiple partitions
all disks must be mirrored, e.g. Raid1, Raid5
Typically AS performance depends on Disk I/O. Hence a Fast Disk I/O system is mandatory for
high volume archiving.
Network: Min. 1GB Ethernet

Such a systems allow archiving/retrieval of

Document ingestion about 1000000 documents per day (100 GB)

Read requests about 5000000 documents per day

With following assumptions:

Average document size: 100 kB

Ingestion time frame: 8 hours
Storage system: NAS/CAS

7 Fixed Issues
This section provides information about past issues that have been fixed in this release.

Issue Name

Issue Description

AS-2839

Volume migration client still accepts default retention setting

(-6). This is not handled by the Archive Server any longer
and must not be used.

AS-5775

If the Patch ASR-1021-001 (or any further patch which

replaces this patch) is installed after the first start of the
Tomcat the parameter Enable CRC32 check is true and
must be changed to false.

AS-5716

Generalized Storage process might crash in case of

database problems.

AS-7610

Tomcat/ De-installation of a patch: It is necessary to delete

the directories within the Webapps directory of Tomcat that
correspond to the patched war files after de-installation of a
patch.

AS-5718

Concurrent exporting and reviewing of volumes within

Administration client might lead to exception messages.

AS-5662

Archive Cache Server cannot be used with SSL on IBM AIX

if the Archive Server is hosted on AIX as well.

AS-3080

Protocol files of write-back documents are not deleted

automatically. Ensure regular deletion of protocol files to
avoid decrease of storage.

Web Viewer and Archive Cache Services

Web Viewer and Archive Cache Services must not be

installed within the same Tomcat.

AS-8307

If no backup exists for the volume then Last

Replication/Backup for volumes within ISO Pools show
1970-01-01 01:00:00 instead of -

Issue Name

Issue Description

AS-8074, AS-8087

If a lot of volumes are used then Archive Server startup may

take very long.

AS-8120

Exporting documents (dsTools export) is very slow using

Oracle database.

AS-8106

A document stored in a Centera VI pool may become

inaccessible for some time if one of its components is
deleted or updated.
The issue can be resolved immediately by restarting the
application server.

AS-8079

The number of volumes for a pool is limited to 1000.

Fixed with Patch Bundle 2014.1

Issue Name

Issue Description

AS-9624

If the volume name is too long (more than 31 characters

because of the VolumePattern), it can happen that the
shadow pool will be created partly. In this case the pool and
the attached jobs must be deleted manually.

20

8 Known Issues
The following known issues exist in this release.

Issue Name

Issue Description

Underline _

Using of underscore within the name of logical Archives may

lead to problems in certain scenarios.

Volume migration

Volume migration is not supported with Hana DB.

AS-10246

Timestamp verification for decomposed emails is not

possible.

AS-11853

If the sign in to Archive Monitoring is not possible then the

URL http(s)://<host>:<port>/archive/monitoring has to be
specified.

AS-11760

ADMS_DEL_VOL_NOT_MODIFIED_SINCE_DAYS (within
ADMS.Setup) must not be set to zero.

AS-9490

In certain scenarios the external host name may differ from

the internal host name and the external IP address is not
equal to the internal IP address.
This may break AS internal communication in two ways:
1. Archives are not detected as local because short external
host name cannot be resolved at all on AS
2. Internal RPC call calls to (long or short) external host
name are not recognized as local, which breaks e.g. the
write tools.
Workaround:
Add a line to the hosts file such that both short and fully
qualified external host names are mapped to the internal IP
address.

AS-9042

The global cache must be configured properly (e.g. at least

one volume is assigned) otherwise it seems that document
access succeeds but no content is delivered.

AS-8488

Volume size limit for Archive Server is 8 TB.

AS-7037

IXOS, SAP or TSTP must not be used as logical Archive

names.

AS-7768

Wild card search within documents is not possible.

AS-8840

If the original Archive Server is down then calls to the

Remote Standby Server then there will be a call overhead
when DSH_ADMS_REFRESH_INTERVAL is exceeded.

To use form overlays or hyperlinks in print lists in seckey

protected archives it is necessary to enable the signUrl
functionality in the Archive Server.
The use of forms in protected archives is only supported
when the data is also in a protected archive and the leading
applications certificate is also enabled for the archive in
which the form is stored.
Contact Open Text Customer Support if you need this
functionality.

Size of ISO images

The recommended size for ISO images is 4 GB.

The maximum supported size for ISO images is 10 GB.

Maximum number of volumes within STORM

STORM does not support more than 65000 volumes

AS-3173

When you delete data in a logical archive that has the

retention setting Purge Destroy (unrecoverable), this results
in overwriting of the document's files with random patterns.
This does not work for all file systems!
E.g.: SUN ZFS uses Copy-on-Write (blocks are not
overwritten but copied) and the NetApp file-system
(WAFFLE) uses an identical mechanism.
The administrator has to check how attached file system and
storage system behave on overwriting files when enabling
that feature.

CDDIR and CDIMG

The installation guide states the following restrictions for

directories chosen during installation:

a) directories CDIMG and CDDIR must not be

identical
b) var directory must not be a subdirectory of
neither CDIMG nor CDDIR
If some of these parameters have been chosen
inappropriately you still can correct them by taking the
following steps:

1.

Edit DS.Setup:
o
o

Open <config directory of archive

server>/setup/DS.Setup in an editor.
Correct two lines as follows:

CDDIR=<absolute path to correct cddir>

CDIMG=<absolute path to correct cdimg>
o Save DS.Setup
Create the two directories in the file system and make sure
that they are owned and writeable by the archive spawner
user.

Restart the archive spawner processes (spawncmd

stopall ; spawncmd startall) and the
application server.

Archive Cache Server, and Tomcat uses NIO connectors the
Tomcat will listen on IPv4 sockets only.
For the copy back job to work it is necessary to add the
variable AS_PREF_IP=4 in the system environment of the
Archive server.

ELIB-6823

If the Archive Cache Server is not available, a client using

the Archive Server API sends its requests directly to the
Archive Server.
If the client tries to access a placeholder (for a write-back
document residing on the Archive Cache Server which is
currently not available) the Archive Server will redirect the
client to the Archive Cache Server. As the Archive Cache
Server is down, the client assumes that the server it directed
the original request to is down, this is the Archive Server. As
a result the Archive Server will be marked as down, causing
all further client requests to any document on the Archive
Server to fail.
This behavior will prevail until the client refreshes its status
info of the server (some minutes).

AS-5267

It is strongly recommended not to use the root partition as

cache partition.
Windows creates a bunch of system folders in the root
partition with special security settings, e.g. System Volume
Information, $RECYCLE.BIN, etc.
In case a checkVolume is made on the Archive Cache
Server partition, it may try to delete these system files.
Depending on user/process rights the behavior is undefined.
Create a directory under the root partition and use this
directory as cache partition.
