Special Education Job Posting

Lawrence, Kansas currently has a job posting for an elementary special educator. This
position requires the applicant to collaborate and communicate with several important
stakeholders. The stakeholders consist of administrators, teachers, other professionals, parents,
and students. The position requires the applicant to uphold current laws and regulations. As well,
the applicant must assist in the process of student eligibility. Furthermore, the applicant should
house skills in the areas of reading, writing, math, and speaking, but also with modifying and
accommodating for student individualized needs. This includes working collaboratively with the
aforementioned individuals to ensure that district/state curriculum and assessment needs are met.
The applicant should possess the ability to utilize a variety of resources and instructional
methods to meet student needs. This should be targeted through collaboratively planning
individualized goals and objectives. The applicant should also be able to speak clearly, have solid
written communication skills, provide courteous and timely feedback, but also be able to quickly
analyze circumstances in order to provide relevant advice.
During the interview process, I would inevitably share my personal strengths and
weaknesses. I would begin by sharing that I house an ability to quickly analyze situations and
provide closely aligned plans to meet individualized needs. I would also share that I tend to
enjoy problem-solving, but that I dislike conflict even though it is an inevitable part of the
educational process. I would also stress that I value working independently, but that I can be a
team player when it comes to meeting student needs (i.e., a parents perspective is priceless). I
would further share my passion for differentiated instruction, and my strong belief that all
students should be held to high standards regardless of exceptionality. This would bring me to
discuss my lack of tolerance for those who are not in the profession to positively impact all

learners. I would hold a discussion with the hiring staff to converse about how they deal with
individuals who are lackluster in their approach to educating all children. This would provide me
with great insight into whether or not the school would be an appropriate philosophical fit for
me, because my passion is a driving force when it comes to both instruction and student
advocacy.
