This is an assessment that will support students mastery of the informational text and
their writing skills. This assessment supports reading comprehension and the mechanics of
writing as that of a student at a third grade level.
The multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions provide both a formative and
summative assessment of the students learning progress. The multiple choice and true/false
portion of the test is a summative assessment of the students comprehension and reading skills,
supporting their knowledge of the scientific life cycle of corn. The results of this test will

display student learning and also provide knowledge to the teacher regarding areas that need
remedial instruction before moving onto a more in-depth topic.
The short answer portion of the test will allow for the teacher to have a formative
assessment of the students writing skills, allowing for the teacher and student to interact and
discuss areas of strengths as well as areas of needed improvement. This will support student
learning, by allowing the teacher to redirect instruction in the students areas of need. The data
collected from this writing activity will be supported in the assessment process of a students
reading comprehension and writing abilities. The data will show if the student is in need of
remedial intervention in the areas of writing mechanics and in the area of reading
comprehension. If the student is in need of reading comprehension, a whole class directed
instruction with supportive tools such as a KWL chart and discussions can be completed to
reinforce the activity. In order to better improve the writing skills, the teacher can incorporate
the use of a graphic organizer and provide examples of an opening, middle, and closing
statement to support writing skills. Direct instruction from the teacher to guide the students
writing abilities will reinforce activities with supportive techniques that show cohesiveness and
an engaged writing processes.
