America the Beautiful is an American patriotic song published in 1895 and written by

Katherine Lee Bates and Samuel A. Ward. The words to America the Beautiful were originally
a poem written by Bates and the melody was fitted later by Ward when he was inspired to write
the tune while riding the New York ferry. Several of the sites that are mentioned in America the
Beautiful are real sites that inspired Bates on her travels, she felt that these sites were what
America truly was. Bates mentions spacious skies, fruited plain that makes us think of the
wide open sky of summer and the miles upon miles of grain and produce that is in the southern
and western states."From sea to shining sea" is an American idiom meaning from the
Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean (or vice versa). "Purple mountain majesties"
refers to the shade of the Rocky Mountains, which Kate looked at while writing the
poem.
