KN Kindergarten Curriculum Sources

Heggerty
We will be using Michael Heggertys Phonemic Awareness program. These short daily lessons will
include letter naming, letter sounds, language awareness, rhyming, onsets, blending, final sounds,
medial sounds, segmenting, substituting phonemes, adding phonemes and deleting phonemes. This is
a time in which the children will learn about the challenges of the English language.
Fundations
Kindergarten students will also be participating in Fundations instruction this year. As the name
says, this is a fun way to learn phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling.
A daily hands-on Fundations lesson will be incorporated into our language arts instruction.
Fundations lessons focus on carefully sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet
awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and spelling.
Critical thinking, speaking and listening skills are practiced during storytime activities.
Reading
For Language Arts, we will continue to use the Literacy By Design reading curriculum from Rigby.
Our reading curriculum incorporates all the language processes (listening, speaking, reading and
writing). This is accomplished through many ways including shared reading, journal writing, a print
rich classroom and guided reading experiences. I believe that reading should be child centered and
rewarding. Children learn to read by reading, being read to and also by experimenting with writing.
Writing
Your child will participate in writing activities daily. These activities will include shared writing,
write the room, writing center, and journals.
Math
Our Math curriculum will be Math in Focus Singapore Math by Marshall Cavendish. This
curriculum is customized to meet the Illinois Common Core Math Standards for Kindergarten
Students. Math concepts will be taught in whole group and small group lessons using hands on
activities. The lessons will be reinforced with math centers and/or pencil/paper activities. The
children will have many different opportunities to apply the concepts they are learning in fun and
real ways.
Science
Our Science curriculum is by Scott Foresman. Students will be engaged in activities that build a
strong science foundation and help them to develop a full understanding of the inquiry process.
Social-Emotional
All grade levels will be using a social-emotional curriculum called Second Step. It is an exciting and
interactive program with direct instruction, as well as opportunities for role-playing and talking
things out. It incorporates proper listening techniques through the use of concrete objects and
puppets.
