Case conceptualization:

Now that you have the background and initial assessment results, now is the time to
determine what testing, if any, you want to follow-up with.
Following the system of Hypothesis testing, complete the following
1.

Christy was referred by her parents because of concerns
related to her difficulty learning how to read and write.

2. Preliminary Hypotheses: Based on presenting problem(s) and initial

assessment, the following cognitive strengths and weaknesses are
hypothesized:
(personal ) Strengths
Processing Speed: Coding: good
processing speed, good visual
sequential processing, good visualmotor dexterity, good scanning
ability, good pencil control and ability
to work under time pressure, good
attention and concentration, good
visual perceptual discrimination,
visual short term memory

WJII Brief Math Average

Calculation Average to High Average,

Area of suspected weakness

Verbal Comprehension: poor verbal
comprehension, conceptual thinking,
ability to see relationships, poor
ability to verbalize and conceptualize
relationships, poor ability to see
relationships, poor word knowledge,
language development,
Working Memory: scores on LetterNumber sequencing and Digit Span
could indicate difficulties with
concentration, auditory short term
memory, auditory sequential
processing, poor rote memory, and
challenges with consciously retaining
information and producing it
Perceptual Reasoning: Picture
concepts score could indicate poor
visual perceptual reasoning,
conceptual thinking, abitlity to see
logical and abstract thinking, poor
ability to select and discriminiate
relationships
WJIII: Brief Reading and Writing
scores were Below Average

Applied Problems Average

indicating relative strength in math

Letter-Word ID, Passage

Comprehension and Writing Samples
were Low Average

Hypothesis testing: follow-up plan: What tests would you follow-up to test your
hypothesis?
Area of suspected weakness
Verbal Comprehension and Language
Skills
Phonological Skills
Working Memory
Language and attention

Follow-up test
CELF-4
CTOPP
WRAML-2
NEPSY-II

Provide a rationale for why you think he/she has the weaknesses you have listed
and why you chose the tests:
Christys language skills appear to be a weakness based on the VCI scores and
her scores on the WJIII. I would like to gain further information related to her
language abilities as well as her memory. I would use the CELF-4 in order to
provide more information in this area. She also seemed to lack language
abiltiies in her answers as she frequently answered I dont know. She is
behind in her reading and writing and her stories lack enriched vocabulary. I
would like more information related to her language strengths and weaknesses.
The CTOPP will provide additional information related to her phonological
awareness difficulties which were evident on the Letter-Word identification
subtest. Spelling is also an area of weakness.
Christys performance on the Working Memory subtests suggests difficulties with
short term auditory and sequential memory as well as with working and rote
memory. The WRAML-2 core battery will provide verbal, visual and
attention/concentration indices that would provide more indepth information
related to both her language and memory skills.
The NEPSY-II will also provide additional information related to her language and
attention would also provide me more information related to these areas and
how they are impacting her learning.
