Input Data Required for Heat Exchanger Design

INFORMATION REQUIRED FROM CLIENT FOR HE DESIGN

1. Fluid details & composition for both process side & service (utility) side
2. Flow rate of process fluid (kg/hr or m3/hr)
3. Inlet & outlet temperature of process fluid:
Heat release curve data single phase & for phase change i.e. reboilers & condensers heat release
curve along with weight fraction vapor, vapor molecular weight, heat duty

4. Inlet temperature of service (utility) fluid & permissible rise in temperature

of service fluid: For Ex. Cooling water inlet temp @ 32 deg C & rise in temp = 5 deg C.
5. Operating pressure of process fluid for condensers & reboilers applications
as well as operating pressure of service side fluid.
6. Allowable pressure drop limit for process side fluid as well as for utility side
fluid
7. Fouling resistance:
If data is not available at client end we can take the value from TEMA STD.

8. Physical properties:
Principally, properties like Heat capacity Cp (kcal/kg.C), density (kg/m3), thermal conductivity
(kcal/hr.m.C) & viscosity (cP) are required at inlet & outlet conditions for single phase fluid.
Additionally latent heat, surface tension, critical P & T are required for condensing & vaporizing
fluid. All these properties are available in heat release curve data generated from simulation
software.

9. Tube size & length:

If client having some preference over tube OD & standard tube length or otherwise designer can
considered appropriate tube size & tube length.

10. Preferable mounting: Horizontal or vertical
