Welcome to Second Grade!

Dear Families,
I am excited to be working with your child this year and its going to be wonderful year of learning lots
of new things. I am a graduate of Indiana University and this will be my seventh year teaching, my
fourth at Brown Elementary. This packet will serve as a guideline for our successful school year. In
order for your child to have the best educational experience possible, we need your help in
understanding and following the procedures below.

Parent Volunteers
Parent volunteers are always appreciated and needed in the classroom. However, we understand that
due to work schedules, child care, etc. it may not be possible to spend time in the classroom working with
the children. There are many ways you can volunteer your time and become involved in your childs
education. Please let me know if you are looking for a way to help. I can always use help cutting, filing,
working with small groups, fieldtrip chaperones, book orders, computer lab times, and many other jobs.
Please be aware that any parent wishing to volunteer must fill out a Corporation Volunteer Form prior to
working with the children or going on a fieldtrip available on the Brown website.

Graded Work and other Important Information

In your childs binder, there will be a purple pocket folder labeled with Keep at Home and Return to
School. Important notices from the office will be found in the Keep at Home side and are for you to
keep at home. Occasionally youll find papers that need corrected or redone. Please complete and return
these as soon as possible for a better grade! Encourage your child to show you this folder daily to help
them with keeping their binders from getting disorganized or overcrowded with papers. **Your child
will bring home a Friday Folder each week with all of their graded papers. This is a great
opportunity for you and your child to go through their work together. Please send the Friday
Folder back each Monday to be refilled for the next week.

Assignment Notebook
Each afternoon, I will review the days assignments with the children. They are required to write these
assignments in their assignment notebook. Please talk with your child each night about what is due the
following day. I require that your child show the assignment notebook to you so that you may review, see
any darts or tally marks issued (per our behavior plan), and sign it, indicating that you have seen it. They
can receive a tally mark if they are not signed daily. **Visit our classroom website
www.campisles.weebly.com and click on the tab labeled Homework Blog to see an update each
night of the days homework.

Homework
Students will have reading homework nightly. They are required to read a minimum of 10 minutes each
night. Books can be selected from our classroom, school, public, or home library for independent
reading. Your childs responsibility is to read each evening and to keep a record of their reading minutes.
This must be signed and returned 1st of each month. This is a required, graded assignment. Students
will also be required to read a story from their reading books on Tuesday nights. Students will have a
nightly math assignment that will review a new concept learned or review of a concept learned earlier in
the year. We will grade the Home Links together as a class, but occasionally the students will receive a
participation grade for completing the assignment on time. At the beginning of each unit, a Family
Letter will come home. Be sure to read through this very important packet of information. It will
explain the concepts taught throughout the unit, including the answers to the Home Links problems to
refer to in case a question arises.
Special Class Schedule
Our special class time is from 2:10-2:55 every day.

Discipline
Maintaining a positive classroom environment is vital to successful learning. In second grade, we use the
darts and demerits behavior plan. Students have behavior and responsibility expectations that they are
required to follow. In addition, I have the following classroom expectations based on Whole-Brain
Learning.
1. Follow directions quickly
2. Raise your hand to speak
3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat
4. Make smart choices
5. Keep your dear teacher happy
So that you know about your childs day, I will have a chart in your childs assignment notebook that will
be utilized, if needed, to note your childs behavior in school.
Note: if your child receives 3 or more darts in a day, you will be notified by phone and it will result in a
before school detention. Additionally, 5 darts or tallies in a week also result in a before school
detention.
Students will earn weekly, quarterly, and semester rewards for positive behavior.

PowerSchool
All grades are done on a computer system called Power School. This system allows parents and students
to check their grades online anytime throughout the school year. You can see the individual assignments
and the average grade for every subject. Your childs grades will be updated by the beginning of each
week. If you do not know your username and password, please contact the school office.

Thank you very much for coming tonight. I am looking forward to an exciting year and a rewarding
partnership with you and your child. Please do not ever hesitate to call or email me with any questions or
concerns. You are one of the greatest resources I have in getting to know your child.
Thanks,
Meghan Isles
