appearanceinBMW'ssmall4-cylinderpetrolengines.TheN13engineisgraduallyreplacingthe
N46andN434-cylinderenginesintheperformanceclassesbelowthex20i.ATwinScrollexhaust
turbochargeroptimisestheresponsecharacteristicsanddeliverspoweralreadyatlowenginespeeds.
TheN13engineiscloselyrelatedtotheN18engine,whichdrivestheMINICOOPERS.Thebasic
engineisessentiallythesame-withjustminormodifications.Theperipheralshavebeenadaptedto
longitudinalinstallationinBMWmodels.AspecialfeatureforBMWistheswitchingoftheintakeand
exhaustsidesinthevehicle.Thus,forthefirsttimeinaBMWvehicle,theexhaustsideisontheleft
sidewhenviewedinthedirectionoftravel.

openedbythevacuumpressureintheintakeplenumandtheblow-bygasesaredrawnoffviathe
pressurecontrolvalve.Thevacuumpressuresimultaneouslyclosesthesecondnon-returnvalveinthe
ducttocharge-airsuctionline.
Theblow-bygasesareroutedviatherailintegratedinthecylinderheadcoverdirectlyintothecylinder
headintakeports.
Apurgeairline,whichisconnectedtothecleanairpipeaheadoftheexhaustturbochargerandto
thecrankcase,routesfreshairviaanon-returnvalveandtheoildipstickintothecrankchamber.The
greaterthevacuuminthecrankchamber,thehighertheairmassintroducedintothecrankcase.This
purgingreducestheentryoffuelandwater,whichinturnimprovestheoilquality.

withtheBMWEfficientDynamicsstrategy.Essentially,engineersattempttodimensionapumpwith
regardtoitspowerinputassmallaspossibleinordertokeepenginelossesaslowaspossible.On
theotherhand,however,thepumpmustalsobedesignedinsuchawayastodelivertherelevant
mediumatsufficientvolumeandpressureunderallconceivablecircumstances.Aconventional,nonvariablepumpwouldthereforehavetobedesignedinaccordancewiththesecondstandpoint,i.e.
largeenoughtobeabletodeliversufficientamountsofthemediumatalltimes.However,thismeans
thatthepumpmaydeliverfartoomuchmediumoveralargeproportionofitsservicelifeandthereby
drawmoreenergythannecessaryfromthepowertrain.Forthisreason,moreandmorepumpsare
nowvariableindesignandtheircontrolisbecomingincreasinglymorefine-tuned.Inthecaseofthe
oilsupply,theconventionaloilpumpwasfollowedbyvolumetricflowcontrol,whichwassubsequently
extendedtoincludemapcontrol.
TheoilpumpoftheN13engineisderivedfromthegear-typeoilpump.Thisvolume-flow-controlled
oilpumpwasusedforthefirsttimeintheN12andN14enginesoftheMINI.Itwasexpandedintothe
map-controlledoilpumpintheN16andN18enginesoftheMINI.TheN13engineadoptsthisconcept
ofthemap-controlledoilpump,butisanewdevelopmentadaptedtothecompletesystem.

differencebetweenrailpressureandcombustionchamberpressure.Whenthecurrentisswitchedoff,
thenozzleneedleispressedbythespring(4)intothevalveseatandinterruptsthefuelflow.
Theinjectedfuelquantityisthusdependentontherailpressure,thecounterpressureinthe
combustionchamberandtheopeningperiodoftheinjector.Thefuelisinjectedfaster,moreaccurately
andwithabetterfuelsprayshapethanisthecasewithmanifold(intakepipe)injection.
Theincomingvehiclevoltageistransformedupwardsto85to100Vbytheuseofaclockedoutput
stagewithhigh-powercapacitors.
Acurrentflowsintheoutputstageuptoaspecificcutoffvalue.Thecutoffgeneratesaninduction
voltage,e.g.85V,whichthenchargesthehigh-powercapacitors(boosterfunction).
Theinjectorsaresuppliedbythecapacitorcurrentwithacurrentlevelof2.8to16A.TheDME
activatestheinjectorsattheground(earth)end.
