Standard #4: Content Knowledge


The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s)

Name of Artifact: Alphabet book
Date: July 22, 2015
Course: EDUC 255 teaching in a multicultural setting
Brief Description:
I created an alphabet book for children who are in kindergarten-1st grade. This book will
feature the alphabet as well as foods they have likely not heard of. For each page of the book, I
have included the letter I am talking about, a picture of the food I am using that starts with the
subject letter for the page as well as a sentence at the bottom of the page that will show the
children how to use the letter and food I am talking about in a sentence.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of InTASC Standard 1, Learner Development, I have
selected to include my alphabet book because it will show I am able to create a easy to read and
colorful way for children to increase their vocabulary through learning about different and
unique foods.

Standard #3: Learning Enviornments
The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative
learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and selfmotivation.
Name of Artifact: Multicultural Calender of Events Assignment

Course: EDUC 255
Brief Description:
This is a calendar filled 5 different holidays and heroes for every month. I am listing
holidays and heroes that you would normally not see or expect on a typical everyday calendar.
Some of these holidays and heroes will be from other cultures, and countries.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of InTASC Standard 1, Learner Development, I have
selected to create a calendar featuring different holidays in order to educate my students on
customs, and beliefs of other cultures outside of what they are likely used to. I will use a
combination of holidays and heroes from cultures that does not a nations anniversary.

Name of Artifact: Science Article Summaries
Date: July 8, 2015
Course: EDUC 255: Multicultural Teaching
Brief Description:
In this assignment I summarize a scholarly article on how we can improve science
education in our school systems. I describe each article, and how the information can be used in
the classroom. I explain in detail the importance of the article. I also include what I learned
from the articles.

Rationale:
To document my understanding of standard #4, Content Knowledge; I have chosen to share
and discuss an article I read from the New York times discussing ideas and ways we can improve
our countries science and math courses.
The reason this article shows an understanding of standard #4 is because I am learning and
furthering my understanding of the central concepts it teaches as well as showing I know how to
use the tools I have at my disposal to improve my knowledge and understanding.

to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.

Brief Description:
I will write down and describe a time or place in my life where I was in a multicultural
setting. I will describe what the setting was, what was going on in the setting, and why I chose
to write about this particular event or time in my life.
Rationale:
To Document my understanding of InTASC Standard #2, Learnings Difference I will
describe a multicultural experience in my life. The reason me writing about my multicultural
experience will fall under standard #2 is because as a teacher, our classrooms will be full of
people of all different nationalities, and cultures. I have grown up around many different
nationalities and worked with people who sometimes could not even speak English.

Name of Artifact: Cultural Autobiography

Course: EDUC 255: Multicultural Teaching
Brief Description:
This is a cultural autobiography about my cultural background. In this assignment I include
where my parents and grandparents were born. I also include my parents native language and
some background information on how my parents met. I include what life was like for my
parents growing up as children. I also include some of my familys values and beliefs, as well as
holidays that my family celebrates.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of InTASC Standard #2, Learning Differences; I have
selected to include my Cultural Autobiography. This assignment shows my understanding of
individual differences. No ones life is the same. All of our backgrounds and all of our life
experiences are different and unique to each and every person who we will meet.

and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional,
and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging
learning experiences.

Date: February 13, 2015
Course: EDUC 255: Multicultural Teaching

Brief Description:
In this assignment, I will develop a learning center for 3rd grade students. This learning center
will begin with some cards that I will make that will have information on produce Indiana grows,
major events that take place in Indianapolis, plants and animals that grow in Indiana as well
facts about our state and the Indians that originally settled the land before us. The students will
have to do a crossword puzzle that has a lot of cities and counties in Indiana. On the back of the
crossword puzzle will be a map of all of Indianas counties, and geological features such as lakes
and rivers. I will want the students to label the counties, lakes, and rivers around Indiana. The
final task that will take place in the learning center is a class timeline where each student will
have to find a historical fact that took place in Indiana and place it on the timeline.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of InTASC Standard #1, Learner Development; I have
chosen to include a learning center that will be created for third grade students. This assignment
shows that I understand how learners grow and develop. This assignment shows my ability to
recognize that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the
cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas. This assignment also shows my
ability to design and implement developmentally appropriate and challenging learning
experiences.
