Historical
The Cardinal Key is a National Honor Sorority that was organized on May 6, 1932 following requests
for a nationwide honor sorority. It was founded and sponsored by B.C. Riley, and it was headquartered
at Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff. The Cardinal Key was incorporated by state law of Arizona
on November 8, 1967. Emporia State University obtained a charter and was nationally installed into
Cardinal Key in November of 1965.

The Motto of the organization is, "Faith, Trust, Fortitude and Wisdom; I shall observe them faithfully,
that my service may be genuine, my life complete." Fairth, Trust, Fortitude and Wisdom are the four
Cardinal virtues upon which Cardinal Keys is based.
Cardinal Key recognizes achievement in scholarship and extracurricular activities to advance personal
growth, patriotism, and service by affording for leadership in the college community and to develop
worthy character by application of the Cardinal virtues.
Membership in Cardinal Key is based on scholastic achievement, campus participation, leadership
potential and personality. Membership at Emporia State is limited to 15 members and it is
nondiscriminatory based on race, religious faith, national origin, marital status, sex (there is the Blue
Key, which is a men's National Honor Fraternity--both are opened to either sex), and age.
Emporia State University members of the Cardinal Key have been active in a number of annual activities,
both on and off the campus since their introduction into the organization in 1965. These activities
include: the Homecoming Parade, Organizational Fair, Homecoming Receptions, Parent's Day, Cardinal
Key Scholarship, sponsoring Thanksgiving and Christmas families, charities, such as the National MDA
Telethon (1970's), Spring membership tapping, and participation at National Conferences.

Each year's scrapbook included a brief "historical" sketch of each member of the Cardinal Key that gave
personal backgrounds, activities involved in and awards won. The scrapbooks contained information
regarding individual member activities, as well as, organizational activities. These are both chronicled by
newspaper clippings, wedding invitations, alumni thank-you notes, programs, cloth samples, and others.
There is a gap in scrapbooks for the years 1981-1984, and the pictures for the 1985-1986 scrapbook have
been removed along with most of the significant information except for a few personal histories. The
gaps and removal occurred prior to processing. The scrapbooks, by their very nature, are fragile and
beginning to change in appearance by fading and falling apart.
This collection would be useful to someone interested in the evolution (history) of the Emporia
State University's participation in the Cardinal Key or to someone interested in a specific member's
participation during a given year. A researcher interested in design might find useful the examples of
cloth and patterns for uniforms and other changes in clothing and style, as shown from 1965- 1986.
