Sneak Peek of the Business Management World
Every business needs someone to manage it and to manage it well, even the smallest
business requires of this. Every business relies on the important role a business manager plays in
an organization. A person with a Business Management degree has the flexibility to choose from
a variety of career paths and opportunities the business world has to offer. Most of the business
management positions require of a variety of skills and certain personality traits. The education
required for an entry level position is a bachelors degree in a business administration program
with a specialization in management. In other and uncommon cases is the experience and
determination that can help you land a management position.
I conducted an interview with Minerva Solis a KFC Restaurant General Manager. Mrs.
Solis is a great example of perseverance. Her story in some way is the story of the American
Dream. She is a Mexican immigrant that was raised in Southern California. Mrs. Solis started
working for KFC in her late teens. She basically started from the bottom and moved herself up to
a managers position. She started working for KFC as a Team Member Food Preparer. She then
moved to the front end as a Customer Service Clerk. After three years with the company Mrs.
Solis was offered a supervisors position. She was a supervisor for six years. After those six
years she was offered an assistant mangers position. She showed a lot of potential as an assistant
manager. She was an assistant manager for five years. She was then asked to go to a different
restaurant location. Her flexibility, her ability to take the best decisions based on business needs,
and her execution of goals in the company ended up paying up. She was then offered the

Restaurant General Manager Position. Mrs. Solis has been a Restaurant General Manager for
eight years now. She never expected to be a manager of one of the biggest fast food chain
companies in the U.S. and in other countries. Mrs. Solis highest education is high school, but
being part of a company for twenty two years says a lot about her. She has a lot of experience
and is very knowledgeable. She has always pushed forward and is always seeking for
advancement. In my interview with Mrs. Solis, she mentions how much she enjoys working as a
manager, but also how difficult it can be to maintain that position. Mrs. Solis stated that in order
to maintain her position in the company she has to stay on top of her game. She mentions the
pressure and responsibilities managers have to adhered by. Mrs. Solis acknowledges that there is
a great demand for business managers positions and the field is highly competitive. Her last
advice to me was to always keep in mind that what makes a great manager is not only her
personality or how knowledgeable one can be, but what really makes a great manager in her
opinion is actually the talented team you hired. Those workers that help her run the business are
the one that make her be a talented and great manager. I also researched some great
businesswomen one of them is Lori Greiner. Lori Greiner is person in the business world I
admire. She has so many accomplishments attributed to her sharp instincts and strong
business sense. She is hands on. She handles her business well even the legal parts of it.
These two success stories along with others have inspired me to look into the business world.
As I have mentioned above a Business Management degree will give you the flexibility
to work in a variety of management positions. After doing further research I found out what
business managers and other management positions (depending on the area you want to
specialized on) education requirement is. A high school diploma or a GED diploma is typically
required for someone to become a manager. However most business managers hold a minimum

Soria 3

of a bachelors degree in business administration. Coursework typically includes of accounting,

applied decision methods for business, finance for managers, economics and business ethics.
National or international firms may require candidates to hold an advance degree, such as MBA,
or have an extensive managerial experience. Human resources managers usually need a
bachelors degree in human resources or business administration. Alternatively, candidates can
complete a bachelors degree in another field and take courses in human resources subjects, such
as labor or industrial relations , organizational development, or industrial psychology. Some
positions are also filled by experienced individuals with other backgrounds, including finance,
business management, education, and information technology. Some certifications may be
required or obtained the International Facility Management Association offers a competencybased professional certification program for mangers. The Association for Financial
Professionals confers the Certified Treasury Professional credential to those who pass an exam
and have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience. The HR Certification Institute and the
International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans are among many professional associations
that offer a variety of certification programs.
Business managers are responsible to assist companies in reaching goals and objective
related to sales, productivity, profitability and industry penetration, among other areas. Business
managers are responsible to supervise a single department, analyze data, they make crucial
business decisions. They hire, train and evaluate employees. Business managers are also
responsible to ensure that a company is on track to meet financial goals, develop and implement
budgets, prepare reports for senior management, ensure the department complies with company
polices, ensure workers have the resources to complete their work, assess the performance of the
department or company against goals and plans, perform human resource activities such as

Soria 4

performance evaluations, hiring and discipline, motivate workers through incentives and positive
feedback. A business manager might direct a team or group of leaders who oversee the
scheduling and output of employees. They are also human resources managers, like employee
relations managers, payroll managers, recruiting managers. Those human resources managers are
responsible to link an organizations management with its employees, administer employee
services. Human resources managers are also responsible to advise managers on organizational
policies, such equal employment opportunity and sexual harassment, They coordinate and
supervise the work of specialists and support staff, oversee recruitment, interview, selection, and
hiring process. They handle staffing issues, such as mediating disputes and directing disciplinary
procedures. They supervise the operations of an organizations payroll department.
Finding out how to get an entry level position is crucial to set up your goals and plan to
get to where you want in the business world. A lot of the job opening are either never posted or
are filled via word of mouth referral. It is critical that you take the time to network with people in
the profession. You will need to search specific job titles. Sometimes you will have a great
manager or mentor who works with you to give you more challenging tasks to grow in your
career. You will need your education and/or experience. Demonstrate the ability to work
independently and think critically, as well as an understanding of complex financial data, and
excellent written and oral communication skills.
Lets talk money now. The average potential salary according to U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics data from May 2013 for general and operations managers was $116,090, with the top
25% earning a salary of $147,50 or more. Recent bachelors graduates will generally start out
toward the lower end of the range; those who attain further experience advanced education may
be eligible for executive-level positions at the top of the pay scale. I found that the median

Soria 5

annual wage for administrative managers was $81,080 in May 2012. The median annual wage
for human resources managers was $99,720 in May 2012. The median wage is the wage at which
half the workers is an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest
10 percent earned less than $59,020, and the top percent earned more than $173,140. The median
annual wage for financial managers was $109,740 in May 2012.
I know the money is good in the business world, but I had to find out how optimistic a
future in these careers is. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment
projections program employment of administrative managers is projected to grow 12 percent
from 2012 to 2022, human resources managers is projected to grow 13 percent from 2012 to
2022 about as fast as the average for all occupations. Very strong competition can be expected
for most positions. Employment of financial managers is projected to grow 9 percent from 2012
to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. As with other managerial occupations,
jobseekers are likely to face competition because the number of job openings is expected to be
fewer than the number of applicants. Candidates with a masters degree or certification should
enjoy the best job prospects.
The final subject to research is about the advantages and disadvantages of these
businesses management positions. One if not the most important advantage is the pay. Managers
are paid more than others in the company and with that comes all the responsibilities mentioned
above. A managers position gives you a different status in the company and in your life.
Managers have power and control over things within the company. There are of course
disadvantages in being a manager. You always have to take the decisions and hope they are the
best if not take the responsibility for the wrong decisions you take. A manager can be legally
liable for financial issues within the company. Like Mrs. Solis mentioned in my interview

Soria 6

somebody always wants your job, so it can be difficult to maintain it. That is why you need to
stay on the top of your game. At the end it is up to the individual to decide if the manager
position is for you or not.
This research have helped me realized I can be a manager. I am convinced I want to be
part of the business management world. I am still not sure in what area I am going to specialized
yet, but I do know I want this more than ever. I enjoy working with others and I have some
experience as an assistant team leader I held in my former job. I have received great feedback
about my leadership positions I have held in the pass. I still have a lot of work to do to get to
hold onto a business administration degree, but I know I will get there with dedication and
determination. I believe in my ability to push forward and not allowing myself to quit. I am
grateful to be a part of a great institution like the one Salt Community College is. I know that
with the support of the professors and all of the staff in SLCC, my family and friends, and most
of all my will power I will get where I want to get and accomplish all of my goals in the business
management world. I like conclude this with a quote Leaders arent born they are
made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And thats the
price well have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal. ~ Vince Lombardi
