What is a Learning Progression?

The term learning progression refers to the
purposeful sequencing of teaching and learning
expectations across multiple developmental
stages, ages, or grade levels. The term is most
commonly used in reference to learning
standardsconcise, clearly articulated
descriptions of what students should know and
be able to do at a specific stage of their
education.

Using Learning Progressions

To Inform Instruction
By understanding the expectations
across grade levels, you can determine
where a students understanding of the
learning goal is and then move them to
the next level.

Allow students to sign up
for strategy lessons based on their
needs. Here is what a sign-up
sheet looks like. Choice and

1. Look through student writing

folders.
2. Sort student writing into
specific learning goals.
3. Determine what specific
strategies need to be taught to
groups of students.
4. Name each strategy group.
5. Plan one (script) for a strategy
lesson with your students.
