PAST CMWS CHAMPIONS

2015 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES

Baseball fans,
Welcome to the 51st anniversary
of the Connie Mack World Series in
Farmington.
The tournament came to the city
in 1965 after a small delegation of
Farmington businessmen traveled to
the annual meeting of the American
Amateur Baseball Congress in
Chicago to bid on the series. The bid
was successful, and, every year since
then, the tournament has returned to
Ricketts Park.
Many events coincide with the
series, including the Connie Mack
World Series Parade at 10 a.m. July 31
in downtown Farmington, the opening ceremony immediately after the
5:15 p.m. game July 31 at Ricketts
Park and the Home Run Derby and
Coaches Challenge at 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at
Ricketts Park.

This years series includes two new

qualifying teams, stretching the tournament to a 12-team bracket. The
new qualifiers are the champions of
the Continental Amateur Baseball
Association's World Series and the
Don Mattingly World Series.
Throughout Connie Mack, keep up
to date on all the action at dailytimes.com and by following The Daily

4C-CLUBSOX

The host team of this years Connie

Mack World Series is not only new to
the series. Farmingtons 4-Corners
Clubsox are also a new team thats
only in its second year of existence.
By beating Strike Zone Morrissey
8-0 in the city tournament semifinals, the Clubsox snapped Strike
Zones five-year run as hosts of
Connie Mack. The Clubsox then
went on to down the Bayfield 14ers
10-3 in the finals.
Since clinching the Connie Mack
berth on July 11, head coach Brett
Alexander said he has given his players a fair share of rest, mixed with
twice-a-day practices.
We took three days to rest right
after we won, then we got together for
one early morning and one late afternoon practice per day, said
Alexander, who is also the Aztec High
School baseball coach.
Since the end of the city tourna-

ment, five new players have been

added to the Clubsox roster.
Three current Piedra Vista High
School players shortstop Kyle
DeWees, catcher Andrew Caliendo
and third baseman Logan Klunder
have joined the team. Also playing for
the Clubsox are two pitchers, New
Mexico State University commit Joe
Stanley and Tanner West, a senior at

Volcano Vista High School in

Albuquerque.
Alexander admits nerves will play
a role for his team, but he believes his
roster, which includes several players
with Connie Mack experience, will
help calm those jitters.
Zach Ahlgrim and Kody Russell
were picked up by Strike Zone last
year, and weve had a few other guys
who played in college regionals this
year, he said. The advantage I think
we have over any other team is that
we have kids who have grown up
around this, kids who have been in the
stands before.
And Alexander isnt new to the
series himself.
Me personally, Ive had the luxury
of playing in it and have surrounded
myself with a coaching staff thats
been a part of it as coaches and players, he said. So they know what its
all about.

The Bayside Yankees are back

in Farmington for the Connie
Mack World Series after missing
the last two tournaments.
To get the berth, the Yankees,
out of New York City, won the
American qualifier with an 8-5
win over the Florida Legends.
Were really excited about
being back in the Connie Mack
World Series, said Yankees coach
Marc Cuseta. We were able to
get through a really tough qualifying tournament and beat a really good Florida Legends team in
the finals 8-5. Were looking forward to getting back to
Farmington.
Unlike in 2012, when Cuseta
brought a young team he
described as overachievers to the
tournament, this Yankees team is
older and more mature, with a
handful of players who have college experience.
We have four players who
finished up their freshman year of
college this year, and they bring

good maturity to the team,

Cuseta said. We have good college arms. Three of the four college players we have are pitchers.
Theyve had success at that level,
and they know what it takes to go
up against a high level of competition.
While pitching played a big
role for Bayside during the
American qualifier, games during
Connie Mack are spread out
more, allowing pitchers extra
time for rest between games.
Thats why Cuseta elected to pick
up extra bats, as opposed to arms,
for the trip to Farmington.
After the qualifier, we were
able to pick up some really good
position players from the other
teams that will give us some good
offensive production, he said.
Bayside won the American
qualifier nearly a month before
Connie Mack and has stayed
busy by playing in tournaments
leading up to the trip to
Farmington.

REGION: ATLANTIC
RECORD: 35-15
COACH: Quintin Cedeno

It has been 17 years since Brooklyn Youth

Service made the long trip to Farmington.
And after an impressive recovery in the
North Atlantic Regional, the squad is coming
back to the Connie Mack World Series.
After falling in the first round of the
regional to South Troy, the Brooklyn-based
team battled its way through the losers
bracket, making it back to the finals to claim
the title.
The rebound in the regional reminded
head coach Quintin Cedeno of the run another Connie Mack-bound team made in the
American Qualifier.
We beat the Bayside Yankees in the
American Qualifier during pool play, then
Bayside won the rest of their games and won
the tournament, Cedeno said. We had to
go through our regional and we did (it) like
Bayside. We lost our first game to South Troy,
then won five games straight. Weve played
some good baseball.
Injuries have taken their toll on the team
this summer. Minor injuries have lingered
longer than expected for some players,
Cedeno said. But, he said, the team is also
starting to get back key players as they come
back from injuries.
Weve been dealing with injuries this
summer, he said. Some guys have been

playing hurt, some guys are coming

back from injury, so thats a good
thing. Were not 100 percent healthy,
but were ready to play.
Cedeno said one of his teams
strengths is its defense. The team has
won a lot of close, low-score games
because the players dont give up
extra chances to their opponents.
But the teams biggest advantage
is its cohesiveness, Cedeno said.
The biggest strength that we have
is this team is a family, he said. The
kids have a great bond together.
Those are the things you cant teach
on the field it all comes from the
kids.

D-BAT Elite punched its ticket to the

Connie Mack World Series by winning
the National Qualifier in Surprise, Ariz.
The Dallas squad got through the
qualifier unscathed, going 5-0 and
outscoring opponents 29-11.
Its a different group this year.
Were a competitive team that gets after
it, D-BAT Elite coach Ryan Nelson
said. Top to bottom, were not as topheavy talent-wise as last years team,
but we have a good group.
D-BAT Elite lost three key players
from its roster to the MLB draft but will
have at least one advantage on many of
its opponents: six players who played
in last years series.
Catcher Matthew Bernstein, a Texas
Tech commit, played for the D-BAT
Leach team that was one win away
from playing for the title. Five players
from last years champion D-BAT
Gallegos team are also on the roster.
Pitchers Ryan Buss and Ivan Ulloa,
catcher Braden Williams and outfielders
Joshua Ragan and Josh Watson will
return to Farmington.
Were going to lean on them for
their experience, and theyre going to
know how to play in front of the big
crowds that are going to be there,
Nelson said. Since we qualified early,
weve been talking about how to stay in
the moment and not get lost in the thousands of people and everything that
goes on there.
Of the 21 players on the D-BAT
Elite roster, 15 are committed to
Division I baseball programs. Four
are headed to junior college programs
and two players, who dont graduate
high school until 2016, are uncommitted.
The D-BAT organization has sent
one or two teams to Connie Mack
over the last decade, and Nelson said
his team is aware of the programs

They know what the expectations
are. They know the expectation is to
make it to Farmington every year. Once

DALLAS MUSTANGS
REGION: SOUTH PLAINS
RECORD: 41-12
COACH: Sam Carpenter

After missing out on the tournament

last year, the Dallas Mustangs are back to
make some noise in the Connie Mack
World Series.
The South Plains Regional champs got
extra motivation to return to Farmington
after pitcher Dalton Brown and third baseman Brendan Venter joined the team in the
spring. Both were members of the 2014
Connie Mack World Series champion DBAT Gallegos.
Those guys have just been a monumental presence in our locker room, said
Mustangs coach Sam Carpenter. Our
guys bought into what Dalton and
Brendan were talking about very early
on.
The Dallas-based Mustangs toppled the
Texas Stix 6-2 to get to this point. But just
to make it to the regional tournament, the
Mustangs had to fight through adversity
in the state tournament.
We lost in the third round of the state
tournament and had to come back and
beat a D-BAT team twice, which we did,
he said. These kids dont panic or worry,
they just come out and play baseball.
Carpenter described Brown and Venter
as the heart and soul of his team. He
expects a few others to also step up during
the series, though some are a little banged
up. Nick Motley, a middle-of-the-order bat
for the Mustangs, usually catches, but knee
injuries have him playing first base. Grant
Reuben plays first base or right field, but
due to a leg injury, he will serve as designated hitter.

Carpenter said he believes his team is

well-balanced. Along with a solid defense
especially in the outfield he has
power hitters and hitters who consistently
get on base. Hes also confident in his
pitching staff.
We have some really good arms led by
Brown, who pitched well for us in the tournament, Carpenter said. Cole Hearrean
and Parker Scott have pitched well, too.
Those three guys will be at the top of our
rotation.
Tony Santillan, the 2014 Connie Mack
World Series MVP, was set to play for the
Mustangs until the Cincinnati Reds drafted him as the 49th overall pick in this

New to this years Connie Mack
World Series will be the winner of the
Don Mattingly World Series.
The 12-team tournament in
Surprise, Ariz., began July 26 and was
expected to conclude July 29. When it
wraps up, the winning team will jump
on a bus to Farmington.
As of press time, the championship
game had not been played. For a preview of the winning team and its roster, go to daily-times.com.
While teams playing in the Don
Mattingly World Series are made up of
mostly 17-year-olds, there is no reason
to write off the young squad that gets
the bid into Connie Mack.

Last year's world series champion

D-BAT Gallegos was comprised of
mostly 17-year-olds, and a number of
younger teams have had deep runs
and won titles in past series.
Adding the Don Mattingly World
Series champs to the mix helps grow
the competition in the Farmington
tournament, said Richard Neely, president of the American Amateur
Baseball Congress, the governing
body of the Connie Mack and Don
Mattingly world series.
The team that makes it to
Farmington will be a legitimate contender for the Connie Mack crown,
Neely said.

theyre hungry for their programs
seventh world series title.
The team out of Marietta, Ga.,
earned their spot in the 2015 field
after winning the Southeast

East Cobb will bring 13 Division

whom are either current or future
Georgia Tech players.
We judge our year by whether
or not we get back to Farmington
for the Connie Mack World Series,
so obviously we were a little disappointed after last year, East Cobb
coach James Beavers said. Its
always big for our program and
really shows that you had a great
year. Its kind of an end-of-the-year
treat for the guys, and were excited.
The team last won a world series
title in 2013.
Many elite programs throughout
the country found themselves
shorthanded after the MLB draft,
and the Yankees were no exception.

the
Baltimore Orioles after being drafted in the second round.
Since the start of the summer,
Beavers said the team lost three of
its top four pitchers. Despite that,
he said, the Yankees played clean,
mistake-free baseball.
We do a lot of good things. We
played defense pretty well, weve
thrown strikes, which always helps
with wood bats, and we havent
beat ourselves and hurt ourselves
by committing errors or walking
guys, Beavers said. I think we
can run a little bit, and we put the
ball in play pretty well. As a team,
one through nine, weve played
well and done all the little things.
Ill say that if were playing well,
were fun to watch.

LOUISIANA ELITE YANKEES

The Louisiana Elite Yankees made
the Connie Mack World Series in the
organizations first year, but the
team got a little help in the process.
The team from Mandeville, La.,
got their bid out of the Continental
Qualifier, despite finishing fourth in
the standings.
The Continental champions, the
Team Elite Roadrunners, and the
runner-up, Diamond Devils, both
passed on Connie Mack because
they were unable to make the trip.
Also sitting ahead of the
Louisiana Elite Yankees were the
East Cobb Yankees, a team that
already had a spot in Connie Mack
after
winning
the
Southeast
Regional, which allowed Louisiana
Elite to sneak in.
Even though this is the teams
first time playing in Connie Mack, it
will hardly be a new experience.
The Yankees are coached by Cole

Catalano, who is making his fourth

trip to Farmington after three years
with the Bill Hood Broncos, another
team from Mandeville. This year,
Catalano is bringing three Bill Hood
players from last year s Connie
Mack team to join the Louisiana
Elite Yankees roster.
Every year, you want to have
someone who has played in the
tournament once ... Catalano said.
We tell them that this is the greatest
amateur event that you can go to.
Catalano said his teams hardworking attitude will give it an edge
over the competition.
Chances are were not going to
be the most talented team out there,
but the reason that were successful
is because we have blue-collar players, he said. We play at a fast pace,
and weve really gelled as a team.
Its a brotherhood. Its a family.

MIDLAND
REDSKINS
The Midland Redskins are back for yet
another Connie Mack World Series, marking
their 25th consecutive appearance in the
Farmington tournament.
The Cincinnati-based team is aiming to
capture its 14th title this year, coming off a
loss in last years tournament final.
The Redskins earned their way back to
Farmington with an 11-0 win over the
Hamilton Joes in the East Central Regional.
We played solid baseball in the regional,
said Redskins coach Dave Evans. Weve got
two great catchers behind the plate who have

been working hard for us, and we have a few

guys back from last years team that should
provide us with some good leadership.
Midland will return five players from
last years team, including catchers
Hayden Senger and Ty Duvall, who are
committed to play at Ohios Miami
University and Vanderbilt, respectively.
The two catchers have been critical to
Midlands success, Evans said. And the
experience of his five returning players will
be an advantage for the team.
Thats a great advantage, having guys

who have been there before and know

what to expect, Evans said. Their experience of having been to Farmington is going
to be very helpful.
This year, Midland will be without the
programs founder and longtime manager
Joe Hayden, who died in November.
Its been tough all year. In our dugout,
we still have his uniform, Evans said. Its
been hard after all these years of him being
there and watching every pitch and not
being there anymore. He loved
Farmington, and we miss him a bunch.

PRAIRIE
GRAVEL
Prairie Gravel won the North Central
Qualifier in Battle Creek, Mich., to make it
into the Connie Mack World Series. And in
the programs first trip to Farmington,
Prairie Gravel will try to do what no team
from its regional has done since 1988: win
the title.
The group weve got is good. Theyre
going to be competitive, said coach Sam
Sorce.
The summer started well for the
Chicago-based team, but injuries crept
up. The team lost pitchers Stephen
Bonnain and Nelson Munoz to torn
labrums, and catcher Joey Lange is out
with a torn rotator cuff. Munoz is get-

ting a second opinion and hopes to

play.
Also, a handful of players committed to
Big Ten programs had to miss the summer
season as they attended summer classes at
their schools. While University of Illinois
commits Jack Yalowitz and Cole Bellair
will miss the teams opening game at
Connie Mack, they will join their team the
following day.
To round out the team, Prairie Gravel
tried to pick up other players after winning its regional. Sorce said he asked
about 15 different players to join the
team but struggled to get commitments.
Many had made other commitments

outside baseball, he said.

Still, Sorce has confidence in the team
he is bringing to Farmington, saying
everyone on the roster can swing the bat
well and score lots of runs.
Theyve all been swinging the bat well,
and our pitchers have been throwing
well, he said. Its hard for me to pick
somebody because its been someone different every time.
While the offense can light up the scoreboard, Sorce said pitching and defense are
the strengths of the team.
Weve got guys who are strike throwers, and we pick up the ball, he said. We
should be in every game.

2015 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES

SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA
RENEGADES
The Southern California Renegades
are back in the Connie Mack World
Series after failing to come out of their
region last year.
Before that, they won the series in
2012 and were runners-up to the East
Cobb Yankees in 2013.
The Renegades are coming into
Farmington hot. This summer, they
won the Firecracker Classic, a
California tournament with 250 teams
from across the country. They were also
co-champions of the Gates Field World
Series in Utah before winning the West
Region 1-0 over the Danville Hoots.
Last year, Danville won the West
Finals, despite losing to the Renegades
three times in previous rounds of the
tournament. Head coach Si Pettrow
said his team put in a lot of extra work
this spring to make sure it didnt miss
Connie Mack two years in a row.
We built our team and our whole
spring and summer season around
Connie
Mack,
Pettrow
said.
Everything we do is to prepare ourselves for this, and weve been very fortunate to have so much success leading
up to it.
The Atlanta Braves plucked a couple
of elite ball players from the Renegades
in the MLB Amateur Draft when they
picked pitcher Kolby Allard in the first
round and catcher Lucas Herbert in the
second.
Pettrow says his team will look to
play a run-and-gun style of baseball,
spearheaded by its defense. He says his
infield features three natural shortstops, including University of Oregon
commit Travis Moniot on the left side of
the diamond.
Riverside City College commit Izzy
Fuentes and CJ Broussard out of San
Diego City College are two of the
teams top starting pitchers.

Our pitching staff is outstanding,
Pettrow said. Were 13 to 15 deep with
our pitchers. We have a typical, wellrounded Connie Mack team. We play
great defense and got a ton of arms. I
wish we hit a little better, but we hit
enough to win our games.
