Artifact 2 Rationale
Art, as a subject isnt really a prime focus when it comes to teacher training. Art is often
seen as a filler subject that students need to give them a break from literacy and math content.
I have a different take on this though. I think subjects such as art, are vital for learning. Students
need avenues to express themselves and literacy and math dont necessarily allow for creative
expression. Some of the fondest memories that most people keep from their childhoods is art
projects that they created. As a parent of a little girl I will definitely keep all my daughters art
project. There is a satisfaction and pride that comes from creating and building. Art helps
freedom of expression, creativity which helps student development.

Teaching art isnt as simple as model how to draw people, places and things. Some
students may have real aspirations or talents when it comes to art and therefore it is important
teach foundational content that they can expand upon in the future. This lesson and activity was
designed for that purpose. Teaching important tier 3 key vocabulary and understanding the
fundamentals of colours. Ive included this as an artifact because it showcases my ability to
create a strong and visually engaging PowerPoint presentation. I feel this is a strength of mine
and this is one of many that I have created in my short teaching career. Students love technology
and incorporating it into teaching practices is a must.

I also created a rubric for the students to use as a guide when working on their activity. I feel
rubrics are extremely important these days. Rubrics eliminate grey areas. Parents will know
exactly why their child got a certain mark and students will know exactly how they will be

assessed. It clears up any confusion. My ability to create a comprehensive and clear rubric is an
asset and it demonstrates my assessment abilities.
